I almost certainly think he does want that closeness, but it's unacknowledged like you say, possibly also because he also thinks he doesn't deserve it. He clearly still blames himself for the death of Koumyou. The point about how he uses his gun on Gojyo is interesting, in light of the first person he ever shot being someone who was intending to assault him sexually.

I don't remember exactly what was in the room where chibi young Sanzo picked his gun, but I think it's certainly telling that he chose a distance weapon rather than one where you have to get up close and personal. Hakkai's like that, too - his chi blasts work from a distance, while Gojyo's and Goku's weapons are more hands-on type of things. Hm.

In the manga the room had rifles, spears, and swords. Little 13-year-old Sanzo chose his gun for the expressed reason that it was small enough that he could use it to put a hole through his head at any time. It's canonically that he could kick butt from a young age but a lot of the weapons were not a good size for how he was at the time.

Adult Sanzo with a rifle gives me scary sniper thoughts. *g*

I can see the distance thing. It's appropriate for him. The sutra is also a distance weapon.

[digression] I still think one of my favoritest bits evar is when they're in the drinking contest and Sanzo gets pissed off at someone and starts to throw a Makai Tenjou on him, until Hakkai stops him. XD Sanzo losing his temper is ♥[/digression]
