Happy New Year
Jan. 11th, 2012 11:57 am... she croaked. I managed to get the most annoyingly long lasting head cold about two weeks ago. That's just about cleared up but now I seem to have tonsillitis. *tiny fist of poorly rage*
I think it came from Mr Lux's mum last weekend - she was all sniffly too. I sincerely hope I didn't swap it with her for head cold of doom. Anyway, I'm so happy I stored away that giant box of Zapain last year because swallowing is extremely painful. Lying on the sofa drugged yay.
I watched the first series of Breaking Bad yesterday - a very dark comedy drama about a rather put-upon middle aged chemistry teach who, for various reasons, 'breaks bad', ie takes up a life of crime. Bryan Cranston is fantastic in it. I'll definitely watch the rest if I can.
A few fic recs:
Sherlock: My heart pumps yet the poison by colouredink. Not exactly slash, not exactly gen, nonsexual kink. Sherlock tries to get Irene Adler out of his system.
Meet me inside by Wakeneve. Slash, explicit m/m, UST. Sherlock and John meet in prison. It keeps the dynamics of their canon relationship really well, and adds something to them by giving them a different setting.
Star Trek (2009): The Lotus Eaters by Aldora89. Slash, m/m. Excellent and very long adventure/hurt/comfort epic where Jim and Spock are stranded together on a hostile planet. Also they make friends with one of the most endearing original alien lifeforms I've read.
Ps - For anyone who's interested, Adobe have got a free beta download of Lightroom 4.

buckle_berry! (Very slightly late. A bit.)
Sorry if I am MIA for the next couple of days - I'm battling the final onslaught of last minute orders. I'm mostly coping with this by applying mince pies to my face and wearing random clothes I find on the floor.
Thanks for your fab cards,
toscas_kiss and
kispexi, and to
tarteaucitron for inviting me to her completely amazeballs mince pies and mulled wine party. I had my own one on Saturday and Tarte masterfully took control of the mulled wine at that one too with her tasty and effective recipe - wine, lemons and oranges studded with cloves, cinnamon sticks, sugar and once it's all heated through and mulled together, a glass of brandy per bottle of wine used.
Sunday was work in the afternoon and pub in the evening; catching up with old friends andvetting meeting new partners of said old friends. I can't quite believe I made it out the house after Friday and Saturday nights.
I have a work do tonight - am not sure what to wear, or if I will make any sense whatsoever.

I have a work do tonight - am not sure what to wear, or if I will make any sense whatsoever.
I am sitting at my desk having somehow ground to a halt. I should get up and organise my work bench for the night shift but I can't seem to move at all.
Good things today:
Bad things
Good things today:
- Boiled eggs with salt for breakfast.
- Finding out there is New Sherlock on New Year's Day.
- Wearing thick dark green tights with vest tucked in.
- My green diamante frog brooch with the disturbing red eyes.
- Hot chocolate in the afternoon.
- Getting a box of
rheasilvia's beautiful soap through the post - I haven't had a chance to open it yet but the scent is wafting from the box. - The free shiatsu massage chair in John Lewis. I suppose eventually they'd ask me to leave but I haven't tested it.
Bad things
- It's frigging cold.
- The roomba is broken. DISASTER.
- Having to work rather than visit

The ancestral homelands are much the same but I was pleased to see a little craft and Christmas market in the High Street. I bought some sausage rolls from the Melton Mowbray pork pie man and gave them to my parents. He was also selling big wheels of stilton. There was a lady selling boxes of amazing-looking decorated cupcakes, although in this particular bit of the Midlands it comes out more like 'cayik'. I was tempted to get four cupcayiks for two pounds but my mum had already informed of her plans to carbo load me later that day, so I didn't.
Carbs! I has them.
Also gained this weekend, the "house brick" Christmas cake, two pots of homemade lemon curd, a bottle of my dad's gooseberry wine and a set of second hand letter and number punches I found in the model shop. My mum got, from various of her offspring, a box set of the complete Black Adder serieses, a second hand iTouch because my brother got a new one, and step by step lessons in how to use her new mobile phone. It was a good weekend.
I'm back now and I'm about to tip over the edge of all out panic at the amount of work I have to do this week. I'm aware this a case of 'oh dear, my diamond shoes are too tight', but I'm under pressure to get stuff made, packed and mailed to my non UK customers before the last reasonable posting date. So this coming week is going to be, um, maybe a little fraught. A bit. I emerged from last week as an unwashed, shambling, glue stained figure and am expecting pretty much the same this week. Thank god I missed the Yuletide sign ups.
Oh, I read this Drarry on the train home and really enjoyed it: On One's Knees, Harry/Draco, NC 17. It has very bitter Draco, which I enjoyed a lot.

Roger Federer ate my homework
Nov. 24th, 2011 09:52 amI caved and bought a ticket for the tennis today, but it was from ebay and a far more reasonable price than the Fedal ticket would have been. So I get to see His Royal Hairness, Roger Federer this afternoon! Even though I am too busy and shouldn't! Yay!
The ticket seller sent me two tickets instead of one, so I have a spare if anyone has a free afternoon, is nearby, and fancies a spot of tennis? I'm planning on getting there about 1pm, for the 2pm start. Otherwise I'll try and find someone there who wants it, I'm sure there will be someone.

Rafa and Roger are playing each other tonight in London and I'm thinking... should I really spend that much money on them? The tickets are slowly creeping down in price but are still not less than 100 quid. And that's for a seat in the really high up rows at the back, not one of the good seats. Arrgh.
I finished my goddamn fic! Rejoice.

Things in my life
Apr. 13th, 2011 07:22 pmI can't believe the last post here was in March. Damn you, time.
Notable things about today are that a) I dragged my sorry carcass to the gym for the first time in about four months. It doesn't hurt... yet. They were nice to me though and gave me a membership discount. It was a bit strange being back there but they did seem pleased at my return.
b)I bought Mr Lux the world's most boring birthday present. It's so boring. Partly it was due to inspiration fail but mainly because the exciting things I'd thought of are kind of expensive. But it's useful and he needs one and I'm pretty certain he'll use it a lot. But it's very boring.
Tennisy things
Jan. 15th, 2011 08:48 pmThe Australian Open starts today and I'm really totally ready to spend ridic amounts of time watching it. Probably this will happen inbetween bouts of glueing things or at arse o'clock in the morning but still I am excited!
Also, tennis players are still apparently made of puppies. There was a charity event for the floodings yesterday and lots of tennis players turned up. Mandy was all huggy with Novak (who apparently he is secretly bff with) and generally been seen smiling! Also he was making embarrassing on-court sex noises with Ana Ivanovic. My toes were curling in massive amounts of contact embarrassement and yours can too if you watch this.
( Puppies )
Also Rafa and Roger played doubles for the first time ever! My face was in a rictus of joy for the whole time. They were TERRIBLE! But there was adorable hugging and lots of grinning:

I aten't dead
Dec. 10th, 2010 04:36 pmI'm just sleeping... no, not really! I've had lots and lots of work for the past month and a half and haven't had the brain space to post about anything. I should actually be glueing moar things right now but I'm having tea and ginger snaps instead.
In my limited spare time I've been mostly lurking and reading epic Sherlock porn and watching a bit of tennis, both of which have helped.
I just read today that Rafa is going to be the new "face" of Armani underwear. I do not know how I feel about this. The Gypsy video with Shakira was bad enough, the poor thing looked terrified. How's he going to cope with his GIANT CROTCH plastered all over the world's advertising hordings?

Life, things
Oct. 4th, 2010 05:53 pmThere has been porridge fail this morning. The microwave is looking very unhappy at the moment. But I just ate the cold porridge now as I was hungry after work. It was not unbearable. Waste not want not and all that.
It's the last day to register for Connotations today, for anyone who hasn't. I'm excited to see all my beloved peeps! This year its in the centre of Durham in a swanky hotel that has a pool. Farewell, dear Park Hotel, Tynemouth. We won't have to wonder about those curious stains the carpets anymore nor swelter in exciting tropical temperatures in our rooms. I will miss that gorgeous beach though.
It's been a while since I posted, mostly because I've been busy with work. I have two jobs now, since I also work part time for my friend's online bookshop as well as running my own shop. But I did find time to go and see Wolf Parade with
tarteaucitron , which was highly enjoyable. She made me wear a flat cap though, so I felt a lot like a representative of the Young Farmers Association. I also made this tamarind and date cake. Highly recommended. I also dyed my hair twice so it's sort of a weird gingery colour now, which to be honest is not what I was after.
I went exploring with Mr Lux on the London beaches that are revealed when the tide goes out, mostly along Walbrook stair and the bit opposite on the South Bank. It was completely fascinating and I want to do it again soon. The beaches are made up of mud, pebbles, bones, oyster shells, bits of old clay pipe, blue and white pottery and ancient nails. If you dig down there is proper treasure to be found, apparently.
My fan activities recently have been mostly fic reading, staring at pictures of pretty people, feeling guilty about the fics I am not getting round to finishing, like my fedal_slash au. Arghh. Guilt. I've been on a bit of a tennis hiatus since the end of the USO, feeling a bit burnt out over the passionate emotional turmoil it inevitably creates within me, even though I feel I should be a bitter and detached old tennis queen by now. Clearly I will never learn.
The new season of Merlin has been quite delightful and rather silly - very enjoyable. Also it really makes me feel like Autumn's arrived when i snuggle up on the sofa on a windy and rainy Saturday teatime to watch it. I've been reading Sherlock fictions too, which I am enjoying although I yearn for more actual canon. I am open to recs of all kinds in these fandoms if anyone has anything awesome they must share. I'd like to do a recs list myself at some point but, yeah. Not that likely timewise.
Finally I am sending some paper cranes to my very favourite managka, Kazuya Minekura. It's part of a project (set up by the awesome
smillaraaq ) to send her a thousand cranes before she undergoes surgery for her bone condition. A thousand have already been made and sent and now the goal is to make another thousand. I very much hope it brings a smile to her face, or at the very least an expression of bafflement at all those nutso Western fans and their antics. <3 Read updates about the project at cranes4minekura

Roger Federer lost a bloody tennis match
Sep. 12th, 2010 01:30 pmWhy is tennis such a difficult fandom? I keep asking myself this. There's no actual reason to be tipped into despair just because Roger bloody Federer loses a tennis match yet I woke up this morning with epic sad. This is alongside an actual hangover from drinking many cocktails so perhaps that is magnifying my woe. Perhaps.
I didn't see any of the match because of the cocktail party and J&J's house, but they let me sneak away to watch the livescores now and then. On my own. Drunkenly. If there had been a secret film you'd have been able to see me watching through my fingers at the damn livescore box, whimpering. By all accounts it was a pretty thrilling match though and props to Novak for coming through it.
On the upside, a moment of pure amazingness is potentially almost on us. If Rafa wins the US Open today he achieves his career slam and I will probably cry tears of pure mooky happiness for him. And so will Roger!
(Roger says he's not going to watch. Yeah right.)

Roger is dressing up like a bowl of Neopolitan icecream for his latest tournament. I am so incredibly enamoured of his look:
( behold the rog )
Also a couple of really interesting thing in his presser about how Mirka was his sort of not really coach (she totally was) and how he met Reto Staubli, his Swiss banker best friend.
Q. You’ve had a period of time when you’ve had no coach. Can you say that you acted like a coach to analyze your own game?
ROGER FEDERER: Well, I spoke a lot with Mirka, you know, because she was a player, too. She understood my game. She came to every practice back then and watched every match. I don’t... I don’t call her my coach, but we just chatted about it. And I had a friend also helping me out a little bit. You know, he was working at Credit Suisse, at the bank, and he played a little bit before, too, and he would just occasionally come and say hi and I would speak to him about it, too. And he put me in a really good mindset as well sometimes.
He just said, You’re a really good player, play on your terms, and do what you do best, use your forehand, whatever it was. And he was just giving me reassurance that I was thinking the right things, too, and I had incredible success. And I was obviously, you know, playing great tennis week in and week out, and that was a tough thing to do, because I used to be famous for being inconsistent in a way. And all of a sudden I was becoming super-consistent

Oh the womanity
Aug. 10th, 2010 09:15 pmWe hung out in London, then went to to York and spent time with many lovely and awesome people (you all know who you are. I won't list you as it would be a very long list). After that we returned to sunny Reading where we basically drank coffee, ate pocky, watched Sherlock and just generally arsed about in a relaxing manner for several days. I had a lovely lovely flying visit from
Oh, and we watched Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (I want my novels to ask questions. Questions like 'Can a rat drive a bus?'), which accounts for my new icon. Plus I think I have a crush on Matt Berry.
But it's not as big as my crush on BENEDICT CUMBERBATCH.
I love him. He's like the Sherlock Holmes I always wanted. I love that this Sherlock is a sociopathic mega-pedant who everyone thinks is a dick. Apart from Watson, who thinks he's a really interesting brilliant dick. Oh, and Lestrade. I realised that it's important to me that Lestrade is not a bumbling oaf. And that Mrs Hudson is intent on not being their housekeeper.
Sigh. I kind of don't even mind that there won't be any more episodes in the near future, although I hear that it's been renewed by the BBC. I'm just very happy and content with this re-imagining of the canon and all the fun it will (hopefully) afford in terms of fanfictions.

There is a massive list of tempting prompts (Aliens! Utopia! Models! Revolution! Ghosts!) and I feel like I have unfinished fics for at least 20% of them (well, not actually involving ghosts, models or aliens or revolution or anything like that tbh. Mostly they are like 'Oh, what if Roger Federer ran away from his famous tennis life and became a beach bum?) lying about on my hard drive. Am I allowed to devote the whole of August to writing cracktastic Fedal AUs? Please?
