Belated happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] loneraven!  Hope you had a fine time.

Walking sticks have come on a bit since my grandfather's day. Not literally just 'a stick' anymore, these days they're aluminium and carbon fibre with adjustable bits and ergonomic handles. It was hard knowing how to use it at first, but I've discovered a method of swinging it in time with my step, so it acts as an extra leg next to the leg with the bad toe on it.

Having a limp is not romantic.

In other news, I must take care not to lick my newly arrived Wild Adapter manga, but it's hard because it's all so PRETTY.

Because of that, have some gratuitous picspam of Hakkai, Kubota, Komiya and Tokitoh:

Kubota is asking 'Does it hurt?', not meaning just Komiya's face.

Kubota the scary badass yakuza boss and and Komiya his henchman bury a dead cat in the park. Komiya at this point is thinking weirdo, but a weirdo he wants to be with.

Kubota finds a lost stray...

...and takes him home

See, I look at Wild Adaptor and see Hakkai and Gojyo. It's very distracting.

Also, hope your toe gets better soon. Canes are really a hassle, even when they're all ergonomic and fancy.

Same here. There's absolutely no way Kubota is anyone else than Reincarnated!Hakkai. Well, or Minekura might just be obsessed with that type of face:) I still can't decide who I think is Gojyo. Komiya looks most like him, or rather, most like Kenren. Tokitoh has exactly the same sort of eyes as Gojyo and also looks somewhat like him too.

Minekura, you're a bit of a tease, really.

Thanks for the wishes for toe health!

I like the one where they're burying the cat, because it really looks like they're just poking dirt with sticks. And then they're going to go sledding or something similar.

And now everyone has to be nice to you, because you have a cane and can hit people with it. In fact, if they sass you, you're expected to give them a swift blow to the head.

Beware the powah of my cane! I just bought it to attack people with really.

And then they're going to go sledding or something similar.

I love this series with the love of a thousand fiery suns. Unfortunately they go back to their lives of crime and there is much angst.

They're in the park sitting on swings, eating ice creams, because Kubota likes to try all the new flavours as soon as they come out. He's sort of innocent but deeply scary at the same time.

Well, as long as they get ice cream after the angst...

In fact, if I could even look at a copy of The Last-Herald Mage without dying a little inside, I'd add in ice cream and possibly a shopping spree after every single moment of whinging. And possibly my girlhood dream of Tylendel not dying

For shame! You mean you're not happy to have him reincarnated as a strikingly slutty bard all of half Vanyel's age? For shame!

That book would gain SO much from judicious application of icecream. Much, much icecream.

All I really remember is that he was hella lame and the very icky age difference.

And I've decided to just ignore the second book, because no amount of ice cream will help that pile of miserable angst.

Much, much icecream.
And chocolate syrup. And whipped cream. Because, although I didn't know it at the time, the only appeal of those books was "OMG!Gay!"

As far as Wild Adapter goes, it's pretty clear that Kubota is going to die-- he even says himself that he's going to die horribly-- like his pet cat that was disembowelled:(

Somehow, I keep reading but am trying not to get too invested in the manga because otherwise it'll be just like you and Tylendel. I read a Mercedes Lackey book once, for the OMG!Gay! reason, but I hated the whiny central character so much I had to throw the book across the room, gay notwithstanding.

But exactly. Though I did not realize that the first time I read it, at the tender age of 13 or so. Now I look at the books sitting all innocent and almost-untouched on my bookshelf and just *shudder*

I swear, the only thing she was thinking while writing the second book was "how much can I torture him before readers give up?" And not enough "OMG!Gay!" to redeem it. Also no ice cream.

I'm so good those books were given to the poor during a "used to worship it, now have noticed that it kind of sucks" purge.

From what I remember, the second book had neither gay nor ice cream. Maybe she wrote it on a dare? Like one of her friends bet her she couldn't possibly make the second book angstier than the first one.

Shit. I'm gonna have to buy this, aren't I.

I just don't want anything to distract me from sparkling over Saiyuki... XD;

I just think of it as a Saiyuki reincarnation story - that way it just adds to the fun:) The art is gorgeous, too.

You can get scans of volume one and some og vol 2 here, btw.
