The BBC screened Jerry Springer The Opera tonight and I have to say that it's fabulous. Sorry, that should be fucking fabulous.  Apparently, it's the most complained about show that the BBC has ever broadcast.

Ruby Wax's behind the scenes documentary at a Jerry Springer show, screened beforehand, made me laugh as much and was almost as affecting as the opera itself. She was working on the principle that since these people had chosen to air their problems in front of 17 million people, having her orchestrate and join in on their painful, intensely personal after-show confrontations was entirely fine. Well, she has a point and she was, in her own words, trying to get those happy endings. She got them all hugging, at any rate.

In other news, the city of Carlisle was cut off by floods today and 3000 people were evacuated!  I mean, Carlisle? I hope that any of you Cumbrians out there aren't affected, because that would be very shitty for you. Also, I got my parcel, which was a portfolio of hand drawn pages from an original 1920s teapot catalogue. I'll try and scan some of this stuff, because it's really lovely.

I've been joining in [livejournal.com profile] circe_tigana's Second Annual Friendslist Exchange! and have spent the day reading [livejournal.com profile] absurdwords's friends list.

It's been  fun, apart from a very saddening report on the murder of someone's workmate and my clicking on a link that took me to one of those threads where you're invited to whinge about people anonymously. These things really don't do anyone any favours, as far as I can see. What's worse, they leave a taint behind-- for people caught up in it it must be pretty hard to forget.  It degenerated into an oozing, pustulent hate thread pretty quickly, but at the beginning there were some sad little posts about rejection and loving people from afar. There was also some genuinely funny stuff at the beginning, too, but this was inevitably all outweighed by the spite.

[livejournal.com profile] absurdwords likes art! Lots of pretty examples on her flist today, which I'm glad I saw:
Severus and Remus in a bath
Snape
Another Snape

A comm I'd never heard of before: lots of people are offering translation services in [livejournal.com profile] multilingual in many, many languages. It has a link to The Shoebox Project in Spanish.

[livejournal.com profile] deleterius, the community for HP and LoTR Mary Sues, posts a lot, which goes to show that Mary Sue is alive and well both at Hogwarts and in Middle Earth, and sometimes both at once.  It's a good place to find some remarkable Sue names: my favourites today were the charming Genevieve Schutz and the mysterious Darkstar Dreamdancer Sue.

You'll be thrilled to know that there are still no bids for the sofa yet (insert gloom), but three people are watching it. All I can hope for is a minor bidding war that hikes the price up to £20, or something. Someone, just take it out of my house!

Quick Saiyuki rec - Gojou by MJJ. I like the things it says about Gojou's attitude to sex and love and there are some really nice insights into what he feels for Gonou.

I should go swimming but can't beat the lethargy just yet.
