Work fretting, some venting ... )

But I'm not worried enough to let it spoil my weekend, which will be spent in delightful Tynemouth, at [livejournal.com profile] connotations. I'm very excited. Very, very. I've even printed out some of my fic to bring, like [livejournal.com profile] toscas_kiss said to.

I'm thinking of bringing some doujinshi too-- Saiyuki and Death Note, some of which I now remember I said I'd scan for [livejournal.com profile] lebateleur, but never actually did. I suck, I'm sorry.

Katrina

I've been reading reports about Hurricane Katrina with growing horror: the hide tide coupled with a potential 5.5m storm surge and the fact that New Orleans is below sea level, people leaving their homes and not expecting them to be there when they return, or people not even able to leave. I just hope everyone will be safe.

In other news, my parents came to visit today and we went out for lunch at the Swan in Pangbourne where I had poutine, which is chips in gravy covered in melted cheese. Sounds like something you might get in Leciester but no, it's Canadian and I ate it in honour of my Due South fetish. A strange dish, but tasty and so filling I waddled for a goodly time afterwards. Then we went off to look at pygmy goats, baby boar and lots and lots and lots of ducks. It was a good day.

I went to see the physio this morning and he told me, as expected, that I'd damaged a nerve in my arm. I've decided not to return to work at all this week, even though the pain is lessening. I'd rather take time to get better now than to go back too early and to risk making it worse.

My physio is very attractive in a manly, pink-cheeked sort of way. I had thoughts that were shamefully inappropriate when he kneeled up behind me on the therapy couch, even with my arm contorted in painful directions. I shall surely go to hell.

Arm yesterday and today= really bad pain. OWWWW.

Doctor gave me something called Voltarol, which sounds more exciting than it actually is, and a note to stay off work for two weeks. Will go and see physio tomorrow. Have made pretty sling from scarf.

Need to learn to type one-handed. Arse.

But on the bright side I can hold Due South watching marathon in front room and will save on train fares.

Strange

Today's disturbing news is: Police shoot man in Tube station. Either they knew he had a bomb on him and was very likely to set it off or-- who knows? The description of how the shooting took place is very disturbing. Armed police in this country don't have a very good track record. I'm thinking about the man who got shot for possession of a table leg.

Le sigh

Short version: took me four hours to get home, one and half hours of which was spent standing in the car park of Birmingham International station. Two bomb scares, one on the train I was on, another one in Oxford.

*collapses*

Long version: too fucking boring for words.

I'm going to sit in the garden, drink wine and watch the bats.

Things

I decided to download 18-26 of Samurai Champloo. Only 14 hours to go...

Work was good today - had a productive meeting and got some ideas for the papers that we are supposed to be writing for the research department. Train home was absoluely packed, people standing in the aisles, and a baby relentlessly screeching. There are still lots of police at Birmingham New St station, not so many at Reading station. [livejournal.com profile] lexin made an excellent post on the bombings, here.

Anyway, as a distraction from badness I suppose, in the past two days I've surprised myself by writing more than 3000 words of a cracktastic, deeply smutty Batman/Saiyuki AU. The mind is a wonderful thing.

This post is veering wildly, but I've decided I actually really hate CLAMP's art after all. RG Veda is to blame - I can't tell anyone apart. On the other hand, I like Blade of the Immortal very much. I bought vol one today, but at a tenner a go and up to 14 (?) volumes, it might be an expensive habit.

Right, I'm shattered. Time for a large glass of port and then bed, I think.

Home again

I left work early, thinking there might be chaos at Birmingham New Street, but it was okay, only the Euston trains were cancelled, and now I'm home. Reading station was packed with people, tv crews outside. Lots of people commute from here to London. I just watched Tony Blair's speech - he looked absolutley shattered. M is at work - we haven't heard from his sister yet. It's not too likely she was on any of those trains this morning. But. It'd be good to know for sure. ETA: she's okay.

The train home was so quiet, except for a connecting door that would swing open every few minutes with a loud bang, making everyone jump each time. Someone stole all the joy from life today.

I think I'll go swimming and then do some writing. Eat some soup, tidy up-- normal things. I feel so strange.

Fuck

Oh fuck. Just seen the Guardian front page. What's happened today? Anyone in central London - I hope you're safe.
