Katrina

I've been reading reports about Hurricane Katrina with growing horror: the hide tide coupled with a potential 5.5m storm surge and the fact that New Orleans is below sea level, people leaving their homes and not expecting them to be there when they return, or people not even able to leave. I just hope everyone will be safe.

In other news, my parents came to visit today and we went out for lunch at the Swan in Pangbourne where I had poutine, which is chips in gravy covered in melted cheese. Sounds like something you might get in Leciester but no, it's Canadian and I ate it in honour of my Due South fetish. A strange dish, but tasty and so filling I waddled for a goodly time afterwards. Then we went off to look at pygmy goats, baby boar and lots and lots and lots of ducks. It was a good day.

Katrina is really, really scary. I really hope the city has the resources to keep people safe.

I tihnk they have something like 10 major shelters for people. It sounds like it could be awful - I so hope it won't be as bad as it sounds.

Bwah! I don't know Utena at all, but that story sums up all my worries about eating poutine. It's a dish that inspires mixed emotions.

Utena's worth getting to know. It's like you think you're watching a shiny fluffy sparkly Disney movie, but then it slowly and mystically segueways into the original Grimm Brothers legend it was based on, and the process is full of metaphor and veiling shadows and alternate tellings. And very thinly-masked kink. I think it's the best anime out there; it's certainly too good for me to dare to try writing for it.

And, of course, the story's six times funnier when you know all the characters. In fact, I might just go read it again...
