Why are titles so hard to think of? Why? Bloody titles

From [livejournal.com profile] carmarthen

Alpha, Beta, Gamma ~ a weak pun on the challenge, which was to write a story in which each sentence began with the next letter of the alphabet.

Flowers of Earth ~ From a long-forgotten (by me) hymn, the next line is 'and buds of heav'n'. Because the story was about earthly pleasures in human bodies. Hmmn.

Hearts and Flowers ~ a cliche, I suppose. The story was about terribly cliched notions of romance.

In the sweet by and by ~ I don't know what this phrase is, except it sounded familiar when I heard it in a song. I think the phrase is about waiting for something, but being content for it to arrive in it's own time. The story was about waiting, but not wasting your life in the meantime.

Pillar of Salt ~ Erm. This was a long time ago now. The story was an X-files post-colonisation story, and it was all bit desperate. I chose this phrase because it loosley suggests the dangers of looking backwards.

Time Under Glass ~ Oops, nearly forgot this one. Line is from a Michelle Shocked song. The story was about a series of experiments, so the 'under glass' bit seemed to fit in well with the idea of Remus being experimented on by Snape, like an insect under the microscope. And Snape's emotional distance from the whole thing.

Touched ~ Argh. Even further back. The first thing I ever wrote, and with a suitably lame title. The title didn't mean anything really, except that the two characters touched each other, in various ways.

Wish Trip ~ A silly title for a rather silly story. It was a rewriting of and X-files episode called Field Trip. Hallucinogenic mushrooms. Scully was replaced by Krycek. Erm.

Wolf's Bane ~ How many HP fics are there by this title? Well, it seemed to fit. It's another weak pun (yay me!) on the plant of the same name and the person who betrays Remus to the world: Sirius. Set on the night that Remus is discovered by Severus to be a werewolf. Someone, I can't remember who though, gave a lengthy and compelling tirade against misuse of the word 'bane', and I have used it in just the way they ranted against here. Sirius was not Remus's bane at all. A bane is something much worse. Can't remember quite what though.

*g* That would be me (http://www.livejournal.com/users/ellen_fremedon/38915.html).

And titles are just too hard. Though I've noticed that I only ever seem to read poetry when I'm trying to come up with a title. So I suppose the long and arduous process does me some good.

BTW, I've read through your story and I like it a lot. I will probably write up comments tonight.

Aha! I thought it might've been you, but wasn't sure. I suppose if Remus had killed Severus that night, Sirius would've been his bane - by bringing about his ruin.

Huh, the poetry thing. I've often ended up sat reading poems for hours, and still having no title. But at least I read the poems, which I probably otherwise wouldn't get round to.

It's good to hear you like the fic - I'm looking forward to your comments. :)
