As a way of keeping track of you all...

[Poll #1034231]

I'm not leaving, although I'd kind of like to. I don't know what to do-- I'm feeling very depressed about lj, specially because Abe Hassan (aka burr86 and livejournal employee) thinks now is a good time to publicly mock the fans.

The entry with his comment was eventually deleted by the community mod, but there's a screenshot here, and an article about it here. I was really pissed off about it yesterday, but this morning my expression matches the one in my icon. I am feeling rather blank about the whole thing.

I set up a greatestjournal yesterday, so I'm there, just in case. The snowballjane at wretch.cc is not me though!

still here at lj, but some people are setting backup journals
i'm just creating a place to be, if i or any of my flist get banned
or my comms get banned....

someone was saying that one of the guys that got banned
got banned for stuff that was flocked,,,
i dont know how that is possible

Apparently so. It's a depressing situation really. :( Although I hope very much that no one else is going to be banned.

I saw the original post and burr8's comment, and I didn't understand either of them or why everyone got so upset. What did he say that was so offensive? I couldn't even understand why he said it in response to the post, and the post seemed like a bunch of gibberish.

Date: 2007-08-06 12:42 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com
It's not just the comment itself. It's the whole situation. Here's a livejournal employee basically taking the piss out of a lot of upset and angry fans, in public, at a time when those fans are seriously thinking about upping sticks and leaving. He's apparently one of the people who make policy posts on lj news and lj biz, so he's high profile and clearly a key part of the management of lj.

It's incredibly inept management of a volatile situation, and also I think it gives a good idea of his attitude to fans' complaints, ie, dismissive.

So, that's why it pissed me off - I can't speak for everyone else. But his comment hit exactly the wrong note at the wrong time and it pretty much destroyed my trust in the quality of the management here.

Date: 2007-08-06 12:50 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cicerothewriter.livejournal.com
Well I understand all that, and that's why I'm a bit upset, but I don't understand why his comment upset everyone. It seems to me that "I wanted verification that they were at least 6 years old" (or whatever he said) was a non sequitur in response to the post.

However I certainly think that posting under your official name is bad business, and that LJ should have a clear policy about what is allowed and what is not. This situation has snowballed rather badly.

Date: 2007-08-06 01:09 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com
Oh, I see. I wasn't sure how much you knew.

I'm finding it hard to separate out all the elements of why it was such an insulting thing to say. It obliquely references ponderosa121's banning and also a lot of the posts that have been made regarding that. It's implying that HP fans are paedophiles. It's dismissive when taken in the context of a lot of fans complaints. I actually also think its referencing a fan's specific post about this issue, but sadly I can't remember now which one.

I think it's a reference to the guy defending Sonic and Tails fic and explaining why Tails wasn't really 7 (or whatever it was.) I did find that funny and have made several jokes about it since. But then I'm not a 6A employee.

Oops, that first reply got away from me.

Ah, I think it was another post I was thinking of then, because I didn't see that one. And exactly - I just think he's really dim to think that that comment wouldn't cause rage.

To be honest, there were so many comments on the 'clarification' posts, most reasonable but some really rather mad, that it could have been any of them.

But lj didn't used to be in the business of deciding the worthiness of the content it hosted and I don't like that it appears to now do so. I'm also very uncomfortable with moral panics about teenagers as consumers, subjects and writers of sexual explicit info. The distinction he is mocking is important. Especially because they've happily allowed really horrible racist/sexist haressment for years under the cover of free speech.

*sigh*

It's all so depressing, isn't it? What the hell is wrong with him, that he thinks that's appropriate. And what the hell is wrong with 6A/LJ that they still have him *employed*. He *makes things worse*. That's not someone you want in your employ when your business is all about people.

And stupid, because seriously, why antagonise your market? We're the people that want those extra icon spaces, that want paid journals.

I want this to be sorted out reasonably and not to have to worry about it, so (aside from backing up to gj and ij and getting my fic on a proper website) I'm kind of... well, not ignoring, but trying not to get too *much*.

Me, I'm leaving lj when they pry it out of my cold, dead hands, but now I'm wishing that I didn't have a permanent account. Not because I want to leave -I like my flist, my groups, my icons, my tags, everything- but because I want to be able to apply an incentive, like not getting renewing a paid account.

Date: 2007-08-06 05:54 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] gen50.livejournal.com
actually, the fracas before was the thing that convinced me not to get a permanent account when they offered it again....

i wanted the freedom to not renew...
the paid account was a gift... so now, i'm not sure i will renew
when it is time

Mine was a gift a couple of years back, when they first offered them at a special reduced rate. And I was happy with it, I really was, I liked the security of it, and now... now, not so much.

I'm the anonymous who gave the Kenren/Tenpou prompt. My name is Ebi.

I haven't joined live journal yet.I didn't know about it until quite recently. About that time there was already some crisis happening in lj, so I wanted to wait it out and see how it was all going to wash. The same kind of thing happened at Yahoo Groups: groups vanishing due to questions over content (same questions as here in lj), others panicking and packing up- and many others got spooked by it all, so they just sort of dropped away.

I have joined so many things that just sort of fizzle, and I end up with accounts all over the place and my information splattered all over the internet. I'd rather not join yet another group if there's going to be a mass exodus from it two months later. It's ridiculous. So, I'm still staying put as an anonymous for now.

However, I have to say this is nothing new. Like I said, it's gotten so common I balk at joining anywhere anymore. You can run, but you can't hide from the idiots.

If you do leave lj, please let us all know, both the lj user and the anonymous reader. I'd follow you anywhere. I love your site. I check it nearly every day. Thanks!

Hello Ebi - I was very entertained by that prompt and spent some time amusing myself by thinking of possible wardrobe malfunctions for Tenpou.

I can understand why you'd not want to join lj - but it can be useful to have a journal, just for commenting and things, as people (not me particularly) are wary of anonymous commenters.

I will certainly let you know if I move - there will be announcements!! I desperately don't want to lose my community here though, so I will only move if it looks like it is necessary.

Btw, it's really lovely to find that you like my stuff. :D

I'm having similar thoughts about leaving as you, I kind of want to, but it would be such a hassle, as every move is. So far I've created other accounts, but not used them at all yet. I will see if I find a good compromise in another place, and if that happens, I'll let you know.

I guess ultimately it will depend on where most of my followed authors go to, because well, fandom is what brought me to LJ, and if everyone leaves, I'll follow without any doubt.

I think this is very true with most people - we are here for the fic and we don't want to lose people - lj has such a lot of features that let fans exist independently but nevertheless in large communities and I'll be sorry to lose that.

I created accounts at GJ and IJ, though both have problems I've run into already, and I've created a backup of my LJ today even though I've failed to export it to GJ even with [livejournal.com profile] brown_betty's directions (http://brown-betty.livejournal.com/284083.html).

I'm staying put on LJ, but with the way 6A keeps messing around I can't help thinking I'll eventually be forced to go to follow people I want to keep track of.

That's pretty much how I feel. I'll go where my friends go, pretty much.

I did have some problems exporting myself, but they were because I had to set the encoding of my journal to Western Windows otherwise LJ archive wouldn't read it. I'd be interested to know what problems you've spotted at GJ and IJ?

[livejournal.com profile] shaggirl offers a convenient listing of pros and cons of journaling sites here (http://shaggirl.livejournal.com/168702.html).

I have a few more personal experience cons to add.

GreatestJournal:
* Some links have odd names. "Your Pictures" is actually user icons. I thought it was a scrapbook for photos at first.
* I'm told that GJ sometimes randomly deletes some entries and icons. Eek.

InsaneJournal:
* I have to reiterate how ugly this site is. Also, full of ads. People have shown me how to download Adblock, but why should I have to download a program just to be able to deal with my journaling service?
* The insanity theme is followed throughout, and I do find it offensive and offputting.
* My Semagic program is having trouble posting to IJ. I get a login error message every time of "Malformed login response, web menus will be messed up" and when I click OK for that the Semagic box that comes up doesn't have the Tags space.
* I use an S1 style format. When I tried to customize my colors IJ's "Choose" colors buttons don't lead you to a color pallet that will give you the color name you need. The Choose buttons don't actually do anything. LJ and GJ give you the option of just writing "black" or "red" in but if you don't have the correct six-place name for the color you want in IJ you'll just get white.

Also, InsaneJournal has gone down a few times just recently, possibly from the increased traffic caused by fans fleeing LJ for there as a result of Boldthrough.

I am so disappointed in LiveJournal right now. It's true that they're the best journaling site out there, but they're still not worth this sort of disrespect and harassment. I have no idea why they think they can treat their users like this and get away with it. The fact that they are treating not only free users but paying customers in this fashion is absolutely unconscionable, all moral questions of the value of porn aside.

I am under the same nick on both JF and GJ, and there are links to both journals at the top of my LJ! I'm not leaving LJ for the moment, but I'm branching out and looking at what my other options might be. I certainly won't be renewing my paid account when it expires in November.

Thanks for letting me know!

I think a lot of people won't be renewing and hopefully that will hit them hard. It looks like it's really the fans who pay for journals and for extra icons, the people who use lj heavily.
