White Day
Ono had dropped a tray of meringues. Tachibana stared in horror.
'Are you ill or something?'
'Hmm?' Ono said, staring at the shattered white fragments that were scattered at his feet.
'All that egg white! Wasted! Not to mention the man hours Kanda put in to beating them. I should to take it from your wages, you know.'
'Ah. Oh, dear,' Ono said, then smiled weakly. 'It's just that-- he's here.'
'He? Oh.' Ono's latest crush. 'Not another one,' Tachibana muttered.
Ono ignored him 'Whenever he's near me, I become weak. I can't control myself.' He took a deep breath and his eyes flickered shut. 'He's so beautiful.'
Tachibana put a hand on Ono's forehead. 'Are you delirious? You feel like you've got a fever. You can't get sick, we can't afford it.'
'I'm not sick. I know how I feel,' Ono said, with a zealous light in his eyes. 'It's just that... I've never met anyone like him before. I can't resist. He's not even my type!'
'What are you saying?' Tachibana said, frowning and ignoring the cold little pang in his stomach. Ono actually sounded serious. 'Wait. You can't mean-- '
Ono smiled gently and nodded. He looked dazed and Tachibana had an urge to slap him. There was no way he could competently make cakes in this sort of mood.
'He has demonic charm,' Ono said, in almost a whisper. 'Just as much as me. I've fallen for him. So hard,' and he turned to gaze at Tachibana with a stupid swimmy expression.
Tachibana also tried not to think about how Ono said that last word, like hard meant something different.
Ono tugged him by the elbow to the front of the shop and discreetly nodded towards the man seated at table number 7. He was on his own, sprawling back in his chair in an uncouth way, with his long legs sticking out. He was smiling up at Mr Chikage, who was red-faced and bowing, his pencil clutched tight in his fingers. He had long hair and a leather jacket, just like the one Ono wore when he-- changed. Tachibana decided not to think about Ono changing, or about the way he'd look at Tachibana like he was something good to eat.
He studied this new man in silence. It was hard to look away for some reason. Okay. He was not bad looking. If you ignored the leer. What kind of man went round smirking like that anyway? He scrubbed at his stubble in annoyance.
'Don't be an idiot,' Tachibana said, eventually.
'What?' Ono said, his face falling.
'You do this every week. There's always someone new.'
'But he's special. I've been seeing him a whole month.'
'He's not special.' I'm supposed to be special, Tachibana didn't say.
Chikage came over with his pad. He was still red.
'What did Gojyo want?' Ono said.
Gojyo looked over at the sound of his name and his sudden smile was blinding. It was very different from the way he'd smiled at Chikage, almost sweet.
'That's a stupid name,' Tachibana said, looking away.
Gojyo and Ono seemed to sharing some sort of staring contest. Tachibana scowled. The pink spots appearing on Ono's cheeks as it carried on were almost making him blush.
'It's a wonderful name,' Ono said.
'I like it too,' Chikage said. 'But, um…'
'What?' Ono and Tachibana said together.
'He didn't order. He said, ah... ' Chikage turned soft dark eyes on Ono, '...he wanted to give you something in return 'for your kind gift on Valentine's Day'.'
Ono made a little happy noise.
'No fraternising with customers,' Tachibana snapped. 'You're supposed to be working. All of you,' he said pointedly to Chikage.
'But there aren't any other customers.'
'The cake forks need polishing,' Tachibana said.
'Just half an hour?' Ono said, not looking at him. 'It's all we'll need. If that,' he added, dreamily.
Chikage coughed into his hand. Gojyo was getting up and walking over. He was tall and slim and strong looking and Ono was already unbuttoning his chef's whites, without waiting for a reply. Underneath his white coat, Ono wore a plain black t-shirt that showed off his slim muscled arms, and black jeans. Tachibana was unable to think of a single thing to say. Gojyo winked at him as they left.
He didn't watch them as they walked away side by side. He certainly didn't run round the counter to watch them as Gojyo impulsively pushed him against the wall and kissed him, or as Ono pulled him close, one hand sliding under Gojyo's jacket and the other into his long hair.
They wandered away together laughing and Tachibana went to sweep up the broken meringues. He didn't keep a look out for Ono's return.
