Much love to my flist for the Gaiden 9 and 10 scans, which I've seen for the first time tonight. Konzen and Kenren and the cherry tree! *squees quietly into the night*
I only got to see the very beginning of the Gaiden stuff, so I missed this. I'm particularly curious because Gojyo has called Sanzo "Cherry-chan" at least once.
Yes, I think the Gaiden chapter and 'Cherry-chan' do resonate with each other. I hadn't made the link till now. Konzen lacks the skills to enjoy himself with worldly pleasures, maybe from feaar, and the night under the cherry tree sees him start to think that there may be something in this idea of 'fun' after all. And Kenren makes a poignant reference to the different natures of earthly and heavenly cherry trees.
Yet Sanzo is about as worldy as one can get and so is Gojyo, except of course Sanzo still lacks the ability to enjoy simple pleasures like human touch. I think Gojyo's Cherry-chan means he knows perfectly well that Sanzo is incapable of enjoying himself in that way, perhaps because he's scared of what might happen if he lets down his barriers.
