Aug. 7th, 2002 07:46 pmFollowing on from 'Northern Lights' and how it reminded me of 'Pavanne', led me to thinking of other alternative universe stories that I've read. What I mean by alternative universe is that stories are set in the contempory world, but history has been changed to make our world less recognisable.
'Pavanne', obviously, by Keith Roberts. The daddy of them all, really. I haven't read a better AU. Some mind-bending ideas about technology, and how it would change our world if we were not allowed access to new developments, if advances were strictly controlled.
'The Man in the High Castle' by Philip K Dick: if Germany and Japan had won WW2. America is controlled by the Japanese, Europe and Asia by Nazi Germany. Very powerful story. The idea of the 'African Experiment' still chills me. Entralling descriptions of American culture as influnced by Japanese custom.
'The Alteration' by Kingsley Amis: if Catholics ruled the world. Vague memories of not really enjoying it.
