Happy Birthday [livejournal.com profile] ellen_fremedon! Have a goody.

A birthday fic:

'What in God's, excuse my French, name have you got there?'

'It's a baby, Crowley,' Aziraphale beamed, hefting the squirming bundle up for Crowley to see.

Crowley leaned back. 'Don't shove that thing in my face. It might go off.' Then he narrowed his eyes. 'Aziraphale, just what have you been doing. I knew you couldn't be spending so many nights in reading.'

Aziraphale stared at him open-mouthed. 'Oh! I would never-- it's not mine!'

Crowley sniggered. 'Relax, I can’t imagine you getting anyone pregnant.'

'What? Why not?'

'Just a hunch.'

'Crowley's a silly demon, isn’t he?' Aziraphale cooed at the gurgling infant. She dribbled back at him happily.

'Well, there you are with a bloody baby, I don't see you for months on end, you never call me. What am I supposed to think?'

Aziraphale's expression softened. 'She belongs to Beryl's daughter. You know, Beryl from the shop next door. Julie drops her off with me sometimes when she visits, so they can go shopping.'

'So you're a nanny? I always said you'd look good in one of those outfits.'

'Grumpy old Crowley. Do you think he'd like to change your nappy? I bet he would, wouldn’t he?'

'No way! Don’t bring it anywhere near me!'

Aziraphale advanced relentlessly with the baby, who squealed excitedly and waved her chubby arms in Crowley's face. She grinned toothlessly at him.

'Look, she likes you.' The shop bell tinkled. 'Oh, fancy that, I have customer. You'll have to hold her now. Her name's Kylie.'

'That's a nasty trick to play on a friend,' Crowley called after him, dangling the baby away from him as though she were a time bomb. 'Yuk. And she's sticky.'

Aziraphale came back from frightening his customer to find Crowley bouncing Kylie on his knee and hissing at her. She was cooing with pleasure and was trying to grab at his tongue, which he quickly retracted when he saw Aziraphale.

'Just keeping her entertained, that's all.'

'You’d make a wonderful mother.'

'Shut up.'

But he didn't hand her back. Later on, after feeding, multiple nappy changes and the ruination of Crowley's shirt with baby vomit, Beryl bustled in to pick up her granddaughter.

'Oh, you two look a picture,' she said happily. 'You do a lovely job of looking after her, Mr Fell, you and your young man.'

She patted his hand, beamed indulgently at Crowley and waved goodbye. Aziraphale turned round to see Crowley blushing bright red.

'Something the matter, my dear?'

'She thought we were-- that we-- '

'Yes, she did seem to, didn't she?' Aziraphale smiled and pottered into the kitchen. 'Are you staying for tea?'

Crowley looked down at his baby-stained shirt. 'Okay,' he said.

I have this odd mental image of the baby being forever changed by Crowley hissing at her. Namely, wanting a pet snake from 4 upwards.

Yes, she would wouldn't she? Poor child would probably have an inexplicable fondness for them for the rest of her life.

Aww, Geez, Louise *g*. You've got me clucky over a Good Omens fic!!! LOL!

*slaps you* - not really. Really, I'm hugging you and saying what a lovely, lovely story. And I could see you skating on the edge of Mpreg, don't try and deny it ;-) *snigger*

I do love smug Aziraphale.

Thank you! I think Crowley would make a wonderful mother. The only question is, would he lay an egg? And would Aziraphale marry him?

Oh dear.

Oh, this is delightful! And Crowley's reactions to babies are disconcertingly like mine. Only I don't have a reptilian tongue to entertain them with.

Crowley leaned back. 'Don't shove that thing in my face. It might go off.'

I think this is going to become my new stock response to being presented with an infant.

And I love smug!Aziraphale, too, and discomfited!Crowley. And I *love* Beryl calling Crowley 'your young man.'

Just wonderful. Thank you!

I'm so glad you liked it. I must admit Crowley's response to babies was based on what mine used to be until my friends started having babies, and then it changed into soppy Aziraphale style cooing.

And I *love* Beryl calling Crowley 'your young man.'

Hee! Beryl sees far more than Crowley would like.

Oh, that's so sweet! Crowley's just an old softie, isn't he? Just the token complaint, and then happy babysitting. Lovely!

Crowley is such a softie. He probably likes hugs and puppies too, to borrow a Buffyism.

Squee! Crowley has the same opinion of babies as I do! And they're so cute and lovely and I love Aziraphale with his "young man."

To reiterate, squeee.

Aw! In a couple of years' time, they'll still be babysitting her and a three-year-old Kylie will be telling her mum about the man's funny tongue. And everyone will just assume that it's three-year-old nonsense. Aw!

Lovely!

Thank you!

Poor child could be scarred for life with the long-term baby-sitting.

And now I have this vision of Crowley and Aziraphale watching her first school play and getting all sniffly.

'Oh, you two look a picture,' she said happily. 'You do a lovely job of looking after her, Mr Fell, you and your young man. It's a crying shame your sort can’t adopt, it really is.'

::puzzled expression::

Since when can't gays adopt? I know they can in America.

Date: 2003-11-26 06:13 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com
For some reason yesterday I thought they couldn't, but checking today a bill allowing gay and unmaried couples to adopt was passed just over a year ago in the UK. So, I'm afraid it was faulty research on my part.

Maybe Beryl's behind the times, or this story is set before November 2002.

Oh, how marvelous! I couldn't stop giggling after Beryl's line. Their reactions were so perfect: Crowley astonished and Aziraphale completely smooth.

I think this fic has definitely been influenced by my own mushiness towards my friend's new baby, who, funnily enough, acts just like the baby in the story. *g*

'Well, there you are with a bloody baby, I don't see you for months on end, you never call me. What am I supposed to think?'

Does Crowley have any idea how much he sounds like an irritated girlfriend?

'Relax, I can’t imagine you getting anyone pregnant.'

Hmm. Maybe he does know how he sounds...

'That's a nasty trick to play on a friend,' Crowley called after him, dangling the baby away from him as though she was a time bomb.

Aww. He finally admitted that Aziraphale is his friend. He's going to kick himself when he realizes that.

Aziraphale turned round to see Crowley blushing bright red.

Blushing demons are so cute. At least this one is.

'Don't shove that thing in my face. It might go off.'

I shall remember this one the next time someone insists on showing me a baby.

<I.Blushing demons are so cute. At least this one is. </i>

Thanks! I love blushing Crowley. Probably a bit too much.

In fact, thinking about it, I make them blush far too often. I promise to myself in my next fic no one is going to blush at all, or be descibed as 'pink'. They might be allowed to get a bit hot though.
