Today was a life is hell day. 'Everything has gone hopelessly wrong and it's all ruined!' my hormones informed me almost as soon as I woke up. But then on the crawling train home I got Good Omens out and read it for a bit and saw things I hadn't noticed before, amazingly, like the man serving burgers in Burger Lord being Elvis. How did I never notice that? And the bit about Dog changing- 'form shapes nature'. I cheered up just in time for my bicycle tire to be flat at Reading. Wah! But life isn't all bad- there are still lots of Patrick O'Brian novels to be read. And this poem cheered me up too.

The Orange, by Wendy Cope

At lunchtime I bought a huge orange
The size of it made us all laugh.
I peeled it and shared it with Robert and Dave
They got quarters and I got a half.
And that orange, it made me so happy,
As ordinary things often do
Just lately. The shopping. A walk in the park.
This is peace and contentment. It's new.
The rest of the day was quite easy.
I did all the jobs on my list
And enjoyed them and had some time over.
I love you. I'm glad I exist.

I'm sorry you had a crappy day :-( Tomorrow will have to be better! And that is such a great poem.

Hey, thank you! Tomorrow is indeed better and I feel more myself again, although I'm clutching onto the thought of my holiday with a death-grip. I love that poem too. I must keep my eyes peeled for an anthology of her stuff. It was especially nice to come home to find it draped across my keyboard along with a book of Durer's etchings- mostly the religious ones and the famous one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse. It's only a small book though, sort of like a look and learn guide to Durer's etchings.
