Writing and Saiyuki poll

I realised I haven't posted any stories since Christmas and something should be done about this. I have a list of part finished things, all Saiyuki, so clearly the next logical step is to finish them. I've begin my Sweet Charity fic though. It may involve experiments gone wrong, gloomy stone houses in the fog (with vampires) and Things in Jars. It doesn't involve psychic investigators though. YET. This might change.

I had an moment of clarity recently about my writing, and it was possibly brought about by writing Cupidity. It's that I'm not interested (at the moment) in writing anything that doesn't involve a) people with strange and special powers or b) magic of some kind and possibly c) saving the world. Maybe this's always been the case and I've just never realised it on a properly concious level. It matches with the fandoms I've been drawn to: X Files, Harry Potter, Good Omens and Saiyuki.

There's another story I'm writing (that I began when emungere demanded that I write random 585 phone sex and is now raging completely out of control and this is partly why I fail at finishing things (and as she pointed out, I will clarify that it is the story that is raging out of control, not emungere)), where it struck me today that it would make so much more sense if it had psychic investigators in it. SO much more sense, and that got me helplessly pondering.

If Sanzo, Goku, Hakkai and Gojyo were, say reincarnated or in an episode of Weiss Kreuz and they were each going to have spooky extra-sensory powers, what would they be? Ones I can think of are: telepathy, psychokinesis, divination, communicating with spirits and... surely there must be many more? You could argue that Sanzo has some sort of esp power already, I suppose. It's a smooshy line.

I don't know Weiss Kreuss, or SPN, but I loved the X-files, Buffy and Angel (also my tastes run to the macabre I like 'Wire in the Blood' and 'Touching Evil' -the British one- and things like Criminal Minds.

I hope you don't mind the ramble ... but here goes my tuppeny's worth...

Sanzo - well he is who he is. He will have a duty to do and he will have the training and the knowledge. Whereas Giles only had the know how and can do the spell, Willow had the ability for it. And banishing evil is what he does best and he will -albeit grudgingly - do it.

Hakkai - I love this guy and have decided that if I wanna go canon, he doesn't believe in a sixth sense. It will however not be too far a stretch to say he will be super intelligent and have a photographic memory. He will remeber everything he's ever seen, read or heard. He might also be a computer whizz kid, if you have those in your universe.

Goku - He will be like those who can feel a vibe and see an aura. Pick up things past and present but not the future. He could go somewhere and say here people were happy. Or the cliched "Something bad happened here" or he can touch something, a book, a pen or look at a photograph and tell you what it says to him. Perhaps he would be a dreamwalker, a little like the Navajo shamans.

Gojyo - Precog. Prescience. He already has a connection with Hakkai who doesn;t believe but surprisingly it is Hakkai who will help him untap more of his powers. In the precog thing. It will show itself in his uncanny gut instinct, hunch, but more and more he will be able to learn to read the signs. but it does take it out of him and will have to rest after particularly bad episodes. Hakkai helps just bey being near...perhaps there is some latent connection they don't know of yet!

Uh mmmm yeah so...Zan will quit whilst she's ahead and stop babbling nonsense. Sorry *runs away*

On the subject of making Schwarz out of giving powers to the magnificent four.

The only obvious one, to me, is Gojyo. The way he and Kenren stand up for others, have a tendency to help others, never judge people and think with their heart makes him a perfect candidate for an empath.

It would be sensible to make Sanzo a medium, as he's already a go-fetch boy for the gods. A very reluctant medium who just wants to be left alone, but all those damn spirits just won't quit so he's got to help them. Maybe astral projection to go with it?

Hakkai's analytical mind calls for something intellectual: some sort of clairvoyance or maybe telepathy. Tenpou's preocupation with the rotting that's going on in heaven makes me think that precognition would suit him as well, as in: this is what the world/our organisation/group/whatever is coming to? Hell, no. I must change it. He would make a good Crawford, sans summoning demons. Of course the way he's a total badass, telekinesis isn't out of the question either. There are too many choices in here, his power would probably depend on his role in the AU.

With Goku, I'm totally lost. But does Goku get reincarnated? Being an immortal Heavenly Sage with ability to crush anybody into dust is a hell of a power on its own. IF he were to be reincarnated, though, perhaps telekinesis and channeling would be good powers for him. (Chanelling as in being able to host other creatures like demons/angels/deities/ghosts and use their powers.)

Oh, and please don't give Sanzo the power of telekinesis (sp?). He's already dangerous with a gun and a fan. It would be totally wrong to give him the ability to levitate them to him, from where ever they were at. XD

Sanzo -- I think that his esp would be centered around the spiritual/etc. So astral projection and communication with spirits would be among his abilities. I also put that he could probably read auras (which I also put down for Gojyo). I think that Sanzo's ability would be more in regards to the spiritual. He'd be able to see if someone was "haunted" or "possesed". He'd be able to tell the difference between "angels", "humans" and "demons" (and I put all of these in quotes since I don't know what kind of world you would be building, but to give you examples). He might be able to tell if a person was a good person or an evil person (like a serial killer might have a stained aura, which a doctor who's in it to really truly help people would have a shiny happy aura).

Hakkai -- I think that he'd either be a psychokinteic, anything from telekinesis to pyro- or electro- or whatever-kinesis. Or, he would be into the more divination talents of precognition (seeing the future), postcognition (seeing the past), clairvoyance (clear seeing, but in my own research into psychics, this is different from a precog, clairvoyance seems to be more present based), clairaudience (clear hearing) or psychometry (getting an object's detailed hostory from touching it, like seeing the who was the killer by touching the knife left at the scene).

Gojyo -- I think he'd be big into the emotional aspects of esp. Empathic and reading auras from an emotional view (he could tell if someone was happy, sad, irate, etc). I also think that telepathy could be in his range of talents (but I think he'd lean more toward the side of the emotional).

Goku -- I have no idea ^^;; but I tend toward the thought that he doesn't reincarnate, so I think he'd just be an older Goku. Maybe he could have limited control over himself. He could take his limiter off for X amount of time and use his full power, but if he has his limiter off for too long, he loses control and rampages.

(as i_am_zan also said) the clearest to me would be that Goku could read auras. The way he can instictually judge people in canon seems rather similar, even.

For Sanzo I'd say mediumship or telepathy or both. If only because both would be very inconvenient for him, and isn't it sort of necessary to pile some trouble on the characters, if we're talking about Saiyuki? >3>

In a similar vein, Gojyo might have psychokinesis, possibly as an ability he was only learning to control properly (think poltergeists). This might be a bit of a random idea thought.

And Hakkai...how about hypnosis? I can imagine him, talking in a mild voice and making people do as he says. Might be almost too scary, that =_=;

Sorry I also forgot, Hakkai will still have the ability to use his chi both as a weapon and a healing power. Since that is probably a mind baased thing to tap into it anyway. Yeah he will have a strong will.

Also since I don't like leaving Hakuryu out. He could as other's have said be your shapeshifter. Also maybe perhaps you could have him with an empathy for animals, you know in a 'Beastmaster' kind of way. Also he will know all the 'dead languages'. No one knows where he's from, know why knows quite why he's with the group and no one know how long he's been around for rumour has it that he has been around since forever... but of course! ^__~

I like the idea of Hakkai keeping his current chi abilities, but he also seems to have an affinity for darkness that might make him sensitive to lingering psychic stains, so to speak. I keep thinking Goku's ability would most likely be related to the physical side of things. Gojyo is already highly sensitive to emotions, and then there's always the gambling side of things, and hence manipulation of probabilties. And Sanzo can already sort of see souls, and sense truth/lies.

I like the idea of someone being touch-sensitive, like in that one Naono Bohra manga (ie can pick up impressions of past events or present thoughts and emotions by touching objects or people). I just can't decide who! Gojyo, Hakkai and Sanzo would all be entertaining in their own ways (smarmy, angsty and grouchy respectively). Goku is the clear candidate for massive suppressed power that occasionally rages out of control. Then again, everyone but Gojyo could have had this problem at some point. This would be much easier with context, you know!

I think Sanzo *can* bend people to his will, but doesn't like bothering. He certainly seems to get his own way wth anyone *not* equal to him in canonical power (eventually). I thought about speaking with the dead or similar traditionally priestly talents, but those are Hazel's specialities!

Hakkai can already use Chi to heal and toss around, so why not expand that? He could literally reform someone's body, like psychic surgery. Great for disguise, or how about moving someone's brain into their torso - makes them safe from head shots...

Goku has to have earth-based magics, like settign off earthquakes or volcanic eruptions. I imagined him forming an earthen wall to provide cover - which isn't too different from telekinesis, really.

I was going to suggest hypnosis for Gojyo, but The Mighty Zakuro! has that already sewn up. So I'll have to go for charm and persuasion,a nd the ability to grab the attention of an entire room when he wants. Pyrokinesis is because of Goku's comment about his hair looking like fire - and it would be very handy for his cigarettes!

Hakkai's the most likely to be able to read the future (q.v. taking his lock picking course). Gojyo would be the telepath in a direct Schwarz match - it would help with his gambling and powers of seduction. Sanzo could make a tolerable Farf - he has something of a grudge against Kannon, and does carry on fighting regardless of his injuries. Goku could probably *literally* move mountains without his limiter.

Reading other people's answers, I've started to think of them as an Elemental group. If that were the case, I would say it's kind of logical to think of Gojyo as Water, Goku Earth, Sanzo Wind and Hakkai Fire. But that's just a random thought.

I really wanted to say that Hakkai's answers are totally the best. Especially the "only pretending to read minds" and the "life-force vampirism". I enjoyed reading people's view of the boys.

I love the idea of Gojyo having awesome super!charm powers and the ability to persuade and woo anyone (apart from Sanzo obvsly because Sanzo is just too grumpy for it to work on).

I said that Sanzo was water (Kouryuu of the river's flow), Goku earth (natch), Gojyo fire (because of Goku's comment on his colouring when they first meet), and Hakkai wood (from the vines) - as wood is one of the feng shui elements.

Thanks for the link, there's some interesting ideas there.

Manipulation of probabilities makes me think of Taoism and knowing/understanding the right time to act, which would suit Gojyo for gambling, and also Sanzo, as he seems to have very quick and accurate judgement on how to act in dangerous situations.

Hakkai as Wood makes sense, but Sanzo's flailing Sutra is too reminiscent of wind for me. And although I've always wondered what part of Gojyo is exactly kappa-ish (in the anime he can't even swim!) I still asociate him with water.

Anyway, my notion of elemental forces is occidental, and I suppose the Feng Shui elements would fit them better.

Besides, I can relate Hakkai to eyes (and his annoying tendency to pluck them out) and nails (in his youkai form).

But I still think the ultimate argument is the liver. I've heard that kappas are supposed to suck them though the asshole of their victims. That sure has a trascendental meaning.
