Here's some photos from my birthday trip to Whtiby and places more north than that even.

View from my brother's sitting room at Staithes. It's so calming being in that room, I adore it.

Looking back to the village from the seabed, when the tide is out. Theses are huge beds of shale. The one I'm on is called penny steel.

My brother's place is on this street, about a minute's walk further up. The harbour has a tiny beach and a cafe called the Sea Drift, where they serve lattes and something called coble cake, and amazing coffee cake.

My brother's place, with palm tree hanging grimly on to life

Me on Whitby Pier, after delicious chips! The circular green shed on legs is a small lighthouse.

Eleanor K's ideal cafe. We didn't go in, sadly. It was closing just as we arrived

The stylish and tasteful Dracula museum was also closed, alas. I can see Nosfertu in the guttering.

This is back in Reading. Not for my birthday, but for my friends' 10 year anniversary party at the weekend: cheesecake of love

The party also had added extra cheese: the cheeseboard has no fewer than FIVE blue cheeses. I find this remarkable.

Finally, the doom of socks and pants. M&S, please don't encourage men to do this.

Eee, I missed your Birthday :( I suck at being a friend these days. Happy belated Birthday anyway.

I adore the first pic, I could definitely live with a view like that! The village looks adorable.

What a pretty little village! I would love to visit such a relaxing place some day. (Teas 'n Tarts... Hee heeee....)

I laughed aloud at the last pic, because yeah. There's nothing sillier looking than a man in boxers AND socks, even if it's a mannequin. No one should be encouraged to follow this example--!

It looks like you had good times. ^_^

It is too bad you couldn't go into the Teas n' Tarts, what an awesome name, haha

That looks like a very nice place to live, although I feel a bit sorry for the palm tree.

And, Mmm cheesecake. Suddenly, I am hungry.

Fabulous view your brother has! Probably less calming when the gales are howling across the North Sea, though XD I do have to feel sorry for that poor palm tree, I don't think it evolved to survive the North Yorkshire coast :-(

Are those fossil-bearing shales? I could probably spend hours poking around those....

What a terrific holiday! Your brother has a gorgeous place and that shale bed looks very sturdy, especially with that name.

The cakes and cheese look like they were delicious indeed. What a lovely way to spend a 10th anniversary.

I love the bright red that Tea and Tarts place was painted with. That is a colour I never, ever see on buildings around here, and it's an excellent colour. Very energizing. Pity you missed out on the tarts.

Yes, with regards to the mannequin, either the socks or the boxers go. Unless they match in those stripes. In that case, they would also need a stripey tie and hat. Then he would look like something off the Helmut Lang runway.

At the moment, it just looks like the mannequin was mugged for his clothes.

Lovely photos! And ooh, I want that view for my (non-existant) sitting room. I'll pass on having a permanent view of the last photo, though . . .

I bet they have a sign that says, "Tart of the Day!" as well! ^__^

You're right about the view from the living room it must be beautiful.

Aaah for things like this I do miss England, but I'm absolutely rubbish with the cold. Winters just killed me! Espeicially up North where it can be a little bracing!

And cobble cake! Oh makes me yearn for the Dales a little more. I loved it when it was right on my doorstep. (Well more or less)

I've found that every where I visited in ENgland had something different and I found amazing about it. The one place that I was not that fond off actually was Birmingham.

Coming from a small island with only about 200 years worth of history, England was like a huge playground with so much to offer. I love it still!

Your brother's village and home and the sea and the harbour... it's all so picturesque! I look around this area where I live and wonder if any tourists feel cheated, somehow, at the complete lack of charm in it.

Cheeeese. Those photos are great, and I'm very jealous of your brother's sitting room.

I think I need to go and live in your brother's sitting room. Because not only is there a beautiful view, but it also has tequila margarita glasses!
