For
emungere, who wanted the Antique Bakery guys playing spin-the-bottle. It took quite a bit longer than 20 minutes though...
Worksafe, men kissing!
Birthday Party
Ono was thirty-three that day.
"Like Jesus", Kanda said, eyes shining, although what Jesus had to do with anything Tachibana wasn't sure. He was pretty sure Jesus hadn't slept with as many men as Ono. Nor had he spent twelve years working towards creating the perfect croissant.
"Yeah, thirty-three was when he got nailed to a tree," Tachibana said.
"Don't say morbid stuff like that," Kanda said, glaring.
They were sitting around the perfectly sparkling metal work surface in the kitchen. The shop had closed half an hour early and Tachibana had bought champagne. There were already two empty bottles on the table, and a half-demolished chocolate cake that Kanda had laced with cognac so that Tachibana would be tempted to eat it. A single, fat white candle sat on a saucer, casting warm, golden light on their faces.
"Why would Mr Ono be nailed to a tree?' Chikage piped up, sounding worried.
He was looking a little pink, sitting shoulder to shoulder with Ono. He had bought Ono some expensive under-eye serum, on Tachibana's advice, and Ono had kissed him. On the lips.
"This conversation is not really cheering me up," Ono said, smiling.
"Oh, and happy birthday," said Tachibana, and handed him a large, glossy gift bag, black, tied with a white bow. It had Prada printed on the side. Ono's eyes went gratifyingly round.
"Oh, Tachibana!"
"I think they're your size. I looked in your other shoes."
Ono opened the box, then took out the shoes and clutched them to his chest, his eyes closing in something that looked close to ecstasy. They were only shoes, Tachibana thought. Ono gazed at them, one hand stroking the leather. He really was getting a little tipsy too, Tachibana thought. The scent of chocolate seemed to fill the room, heavy and sweet, mixed with the scent of melting wax.
"Tachibana, you're a wonderful man! I adore you!"
"Well," he said, trying not to feel too pleased. "I thought you'd be going out with your partner tonight," Tachibana said, after a suitable pause.
Kanda dug his elbow into Tachibana's side. Ono shrugged and then smiled into his glass. He looked up and caught Tachibana's eye. The kitchen seemed suddenly a little too warm.
"I've got you three, haven't I? That's enough men for one night."
"Oh, yes, Mr Ono!" Chikage cried.
"Of course, master," Kanda said, bowing until his head touched the table with a thunk. "Ow."
Tachibana fetched more champagne, because it seemed the only sensible option at that point, and it let him escape from Ono's sharp smile. When he came back, Chikage was dabbing the eye serum under Ono's eyes, smoothing it in, and Kanda was snoring gently. Tachibana refilled their glasses, watching with keen interest as champagne flowed down the side of the glasses and formed a small lake on the table.
"We should play party games now," Chikage said, spilling champagne down his chin. Ono dabbed it off for him. "Shouldn't we?"
"Spin the bottle," Kanda mumbled, propping himself upright on one elbow. "S'a classic."
"But-- but that's a kissing game!" said Tachibana.
"Er, yes… " Ono said, leaning his head on Chikage's shoulder. "Perhaps it would be safer to try something else."
"I-- I'm not afraid," Chikage said. "Um, but why would it be dangerous?"
"Listen, Mr Gay of Demonic Charm, it doesn't work on me, remember?" Tachibana said, shoving the bottle at him. "Spin it."
He was almost sure Ono cheated. He hardly span it all, and it had only made a lazy half-turn before it stopped. It was pointing at Chikage.
"Oh," Chikage murmured.
"Chi…"
"Oh, oh. Mmmh. Mmmh. Ah. Hah."
"Stop it now," Tachibana said, but his voice sounded very small. They didn’t hear, in any case. They seemed to flicker in the soft light, wrapped around each other. "It's Chikage's turn," he said, more loudly.
"Oh. Of course. Silly me," said Ono, pulling away, leaving Chikage with his lips parted and wet and his eyes closed.
"Mr Ono," Chikage breathed.
"The bottle! The bottle!" Tachibana said.
Anything to stop the kissing. No. Wait. Chikage had spun the bottle and now it was rattling to a halt in front of him.
"You really don’t have to kiss me," he said, his fingers gripping the cold metal edge of the table.
"Yes, Master," Chikage said, in the sort of husky voice that Tachibana usually associated with-- well, not with Chikage. His eyes were heavy and sultry. Tachibana heard Ono sigh happily.
"You might like it, you miserable old bastard," Kanda muttered into the table.
"I don’t see you being so eager!"
"M'too drunk," Kanda sighed, nestling his head into his arm.
Tachibana wasn't at all prepared for when Chikage leaned over the table and slid his hand into Tachibana's hair, thumb stroking softly over his cheek. He kissed Tachibana's forehead.
"Chikage!"
"But-- it's the rules," Chikage said, sitting down with a wobble.
Ono pushed the bottle over. His gaze was soft and dreamy, like his smile. We're all just drunk, Tachibana thought. I'm definitely not kissing Ono. The thought didn't really comfort him.
"I don't want to play," he said, and had a rush of helplessness, like a child at a grown up party. The smell of chocolate and cream and brandy was suffocating.
"You should try new things," Ono said, gently. "You might enjoy them."
"What? Try new things, like you do?"
Ono shrugged, and Tachibana was sorry he’d stopped smiling. “Maybe not quite like me.”
"I’m perfectly happy with my life," he said, "just like this. I don’t have time for new things.”
"You opened a cake shop," Kanda murmured. "That was new, wasn't it?"
If I spin, it's going to land on him, thought Tachibana, watching Ono. Of course it will. The edge of Ono's glasses glinted very faintly in the candlelight. His skin looked so smooth. He didn't look thirty-three years old. The green bottle rattled on the table, because he'd spun it hard. It slid a little, then stopped, its open, round mouth pointing straight at Ono.
Ono leaned forward and laid his hand over Tachibana's. His palm was warm and a little damp. Their eyes met.
"I think maybe we'd better all go home, don’t you?" Ono said.
His voice was kind and understanding, and Tachibana realised he had no idea what he wanted from Ono. Maybe he did want new things. He couldn't move his hand.
"No more kissing?" Chikage sighed. His eyes were drooping shut.
"No, not tonight," he heard himself say.
