Date: 2006-03-03 10:18 pm (UTC)Gojyo can never quite believe that Sanzo can be such a bastard. I like this about Gojyo, because it means he's so good natured that he can't believe anyone could genuinely be that horrid. He's a foil for Sanzo's sharp tongue a lot of the time, but Sanzo's casual use of his fan on Gojyo's head and his expectations that Gojyo will light his cigarettes has almost a possessive feel about it. With them all this sort of of day to day interaction counts as family life, and by Sanzo treating him like this it means Gojyo has a place in that family, which is exactly what Gojyo needs. Gojyo is as individualistic as Sanzo, and does what he think is right, according to his own rather unconventional set of morals. I think, as the journey goes on, that Sanzo respects this.
As a pairing, I think they're hard to write, because the sex between them would be like a fight. Neither is going to want to back down and let the other 'win'. That said, I do see a definite spark of flirtatiousness between them at times. There's s a lot more I could say about them but I'll stop here, I think!

Date: 2006-03-03 09:51 pm (UTC)Kouryuu is incredibly self possessed, either genuinely, or, as an act to protect himself from the disapproval of others. He does and believes exactly as he chooses, letting no one tell him what to do, unless that person is the one person he has ever loved, Koumyou Sanzo. The thing about Kouryuu is that he doesn't fit. The other novices don't like him, so he hates them back, or pretends not to care.
You have to wonder what would have become of him if Koumyou hadn't been killed and the sutra not been taken. Would he have been content to stay with Koumyou and eventually take his place as head of the monastery? I think he would have done and would have accepted that this was his life, quiet and boring as it was. I also think he would have wanted to follow in Koumyou's footsteps. Whatever else he was, he was a very talented child and, probably in his own way, very devout. Of course, that didn't last.
