Saiyuki snippet: Ukoku and Koumyou

This petite ficlet was written for wildelamassu's birthday meme. Happy Birthday!



The gardens of the temple at Chou'an were washed in moonlight. When the newly crowned Ukoku Sanzo kissed him, it wasn't entirely unexpected, although the way he was almost demure about it was.

'Hmmm. Oh.'

'Are you shocked?' Ukoku said, pulling back but leaving his hands on Koumyou's shoulders, where they moved slowly, stroking over his scripture.

'No, but do you want me to be? I can pretend if it makes you feel better.'

'You're laughing at me,' said Ukoku and his features sagged in a way that Koumyou didn't like.

'No,' he said, because he wasn't. He took Ukoku's arm and they walked on a little further. Koumyou bit his lip. He’d seen this coming and had done nothing to stop it.

'Being a Sanzo is what you wanted most of all. Does it make you happy?' He looked at the bare place on Ukoku's forehead where there was no chakra. Ukoku grinned and put his finger there, tapping the place where it should be.

'Well, no, actually.'

'Listen, Ukoku-- ' was as far as he got before Ukoku turned and kissed him again and this time he was a bit more adventurous with his tongue. Koumyou pushed him back very gently but with unstoppable force. 'Careful with me. I'm an old man, after all.'

'Don't make me laugh. You're not old.'

'I'm nearly twice your age! Isn't there someone younger that you like?'

'Koumyou,' Ukoku said, and looked at him then as if he were very simple, 'they all bore me to death.' He leaned in again.

'Goodness me. But if it's just sex, it doesn't matter if they bore you, does it?'

'No, no. You're right. But wouldn't having both be better?'

'Well, I haven't done it for years and I'm not starting again now.'

'Koumyou,' he murmured. 'That's no reason not to.'

'Stop,' he said, in a tone of voice he used only rarely and Ukoku did, instantly. 'Just walk with me instead.'

Ukoku moved away and fell in to step beside him. He didn't say anything.

'Look, isn't the moon beautiful tonight?’ Koumyou said, after a while.

Ukoku looked up at its pale, round face and then looked over at him, just one quick, careful glance.

'Yeah.'

You are so good at creating a visual image. Such a beautiful image too. But I can't figure out who Ukoku is ~ whimpers ~ I'm still trying to get a handle on the entire Saiyuki story... and there is so much of it. Do you have a link to Ukoku for his pic or short bio? BTW, I've added you to my friend's list so that can keep up with your Saiyuki drabbles and fics. XD

If I tell you who Ukoku is then it's a big spoiler for the newest epsiodes, but if if you want to know, highlight the bit below.

Ukoku is the name Nii Jienyi took when he was given the title of Sanzo many years ago. Ukoku Sanzo was friends (or enemies, it's hard to tell:) with Koumyou Sanzo, who was Genjo Sanzo's teacher

No there certainly isn't... I'm hesitant to write him though. Hakkai's just hard for me to pin down to my satisfaction; Koumyou, on the other hand, intimidates the hell out of me. I feel like he'd be looking over my shoulder, shaking his head and laughing to himself at the characterisation with that infuriating patience he has for us mere mortals. XD

In short, um, please write more of him? :D
