It's really the first chance I've had to sit down and read the scanlations properly (thanks
snowyheart for uploading them).
Not particularly organised thoughts:
Gato killed Hazel's master? It seems like this is the case, especially on the last page where there's what seems like a flashback to Hazel crying, and 'atonement'. What else would Gato be atoning for? I don't know how this fits with Hazel saying his master was killed by monsters. Maybe Gato is a 'monster', as Hazel calls youkai. To Hazel they are one and the same. Isn't it convenient that Hazel has suffered a similar loss as Sanzo? This might be Hazel manipulating the facts to manipulate Sanzo. He does seem to know who Sanzo is when they initially meet, and also that Hakkai, Gojyo and Goku are youkai, so it's obvious he's done some research.
Also, what is Ni Jenyi doing hiding his sutra/the Seiten sutra in his toy rabbit, and why does he want to use it now? It looks like he wants something to happen-- perhaps it's to prevent either Hazel or the Sanzo-ikkou from being killed. Another thought, where did Hazel's soul collecting amulet come from anyway? It's not exactly standard issue kit for a Catholic priest. Ni Jienyi seems to want its power. I don't think Hazel ever did answer Sanzo's question about if the amulet could revive youkai using human souls.
Hakkai seems to think that he's like Hazel-- perhaps because he would want to bring someone back to life at any cost, or that he wishes youkai didn't exist. Maybe he's seeing in Hazel's single-minded hatred a reflection of himself, or at least, a reflection of Hakkai as he used to be. Perhaps Hazel is finishing the process that Gojyo began four years ago-- Hakkai is a youkai and doesn't value himself as completely worthless anymore, as I suspect he did when he first changed.

My feeling is that it comes in large part from the bigotry--which Hakkai seems to be over, but is not innocent of. Also, I think the idea of trading lives for lives really rocks him, because he's afraid he'd do it if he could
