I watched an episode of Gensomaden Saiyuki last night with the US dub on it. Why does Hakkai talk like a surfer dude? Why? After the angelic tones of Akira Ishida (did I mention I'd like his voice piped into my inner ear 24/7?) it's a bit hard to take. Some of the dialogue did make me laugh though, so I think I'll persevere with it.

And for that matter, why is Gojyo the only one who sounds Asian? ^,^;;
Actually, I got convinced pretty quickly. Although I was lucky enough to be able to watch the dubs with Rune (I only have the subs, and not well translated), and I kept staring at the screen and going, "I'm surprised you can even recognize my guy!"

What bothers most people about the dubbed Hakkai--the swearing--didn't bother me. The subbed Hakkai has quite a few shimattas, too, mixed in with his maa maas and yare yares, and it wasn't like he was bellowing curses out (unlike Goku o.O); there was something very normal about the way he did it.

I was a bit surprised by the swearing, because as far as I can tell, going by the subs and the manga translation, Hakkai is quite formal in the way he speaks and if he swears it's not in the subs (which is odd if you think about it, if they swear openly in the dub). So Hakkai does swear? I like that - what does shimatte mean?

Thank you! I never did know what those two words meant and now I've actually been motivated to get off my sorry backside and learn something:-)

I've been poking around on various scary anime translation pages and shimatte seems to be a sort of all purpose mild swear word something like k'so (which it shit?) but a bit less strong.

I used to work with a surfer dude--bleached blonde, excessively tan, stoner, lived on the beach, the whole nine yards. The juxtaposition of images is making my brain melt. Damn it.

Hee! I've only watched two so far, but I laughed heartily at the Sanzo telling Gojyo and Goku to 'get a room' in ep two. I'm pretty certain that's not what they're actually saying though.
