[livejournal.com profile] daegaer asked for Monocle squee!

Oh man, I have to say my monocle love began with Raffles the Gentleman Thief, a TV show in the mid 70s. It was totally Raffles/Bunny for me in those early years - they were so doing it. My obsession with monocles grew, fed by the front covers of PG Wodehouse novels, Laurel and Hardy films and Paul McGann in the Monocled Mutineer (although, sadly, not much monocle wearing was in evidence).

Monocles: so round and so reflective of the light in a creepy yet dazzling way. So good at hiding that false eye and for giving a person a surprised look, if only on one side of their face. But most of all it's the prowess a man shows, the sheer skill and determination to keep the damn thing on his face that impresses me. For me, the true monocle wearer is the one that keeps his monocle on at all times and it can't be budged, whether by explosions, the stealing of knick-knacks, painful kicks to the head, being shot for desertion, collisions, vast emotional pain or having buildings land on his head.

Anyway, these days, if a man came up to me in the street who had sexy dark hair and green eyes and threw ki balls around, I would totally say go away, unless he had a monocle on. If the monocle was there then I'd pin him to the ground and lick him to death.
