Dec. 3rd, 2004 11:41 amHakkai doesn't smile all the time. In fact, in volume four he gets to wear various expressions of insanity, hatred and misery. Some very scary expressions, all in all, and I think he smiles the least out of all nine volumes.

The hands - just before Gojyo sneaks up on him. I wonder why Hakkai can be snuck up on so easily- Goku does it too, when he draws Hakkai's lifeline on. Maybe it's something to do with the lack of a right eye. It's a fake eye, so why does he need to wear a monocle? Let's address the monocle more fully (because it's obviously a matter of world shattering importance)- is it just Minkura's whim? Why not get the glass fixed? Sometimes it's circular, other times it looks more like one half of an old pair of Sanzo's reading glasses. How does it stay on his nose?

Yowzah. That is all.

The same expression as the picture below, yet lacking the same craziness as Gonou, which is fitting because this is Hakkai, the balanced rational one. Er.

Gonou's flat, crazy stare at the moment he loses it with the villagers. I love the glint of white in his eye - it bring the whole drawing alive. Minekura's faces are so expressive and sometimes in very subtle ways - I find myself peering at things thinking, just what has she done there?

I love this - look at the way streaks of blood are in the same place as Gojyo's scars, and the way in which they echo Kougaiji's markings too.

Mmm, raw hate.

Hakkai playing at being Chin Yisou's devil doll. He pretends very well to be incredibly creepy, doesn't he? Ulp.

I imagine the the people who get to see this particular expression are never very happy about it afterwards. Sly Hakkai - he pulls this face again in vol 9, when he manipulates Sanzo into playing Mahjong.

As he watches Chin Yisou disintegrate - he doesn't look relieved or triumphant, but very sad and tired.

And finally... I lied. He is smiling here, but I think we needed a break from the crazy. And also I had to put it in because I think he's got the sweetest expression on his face and it's all aimed at Gojyo.

Date: 2004-12-06 11:55 pm (UTC)::nods:: I think maybe so. And Gojyo's somewhat less straightforward smile-wise than you might think, 'cause it's used less as a mask than as denial or perhaps a facade...ie. less something that'll make things seem innocuous than something that'll make things seem larger...
One of my favourites is one that I always take to mean: 'Gojyo stop flirting with her, you're really pissing me off' (he does a very big smile for that particular occasion- I'll track down the image, but I think it's in vol 3 when Gojyo is flirting with the maid and Sanzo threatens him with the fan)
XD I know *exactly* the one you're talking about. I'm debating switching between one of the angry moods for that or the 'jealous' mood...speaking of which here are the moods so far. I'm not happy with all of it yet and I'm still trying to figure out moods for some of them...I would adore if you have any thoughts on any of it...
There's also the 'you're an idiot, but actually I love you,' one he does to Gojyo a couple of times.
heee!! I used one of those for 'flirty'...

Date: 2004-12-07 04:46 am (UTC)You mean like a sort of bravado? Yes, I can see that-- he's a bit of a gay blade! Apart from Goku, he's also the one who shows his emotions most easily, or at least, he's quick to laugh and get angry. He's not so quick to show anything that might give somebody a clue about his inner life, and when he does he does it obliquely. At the end of vol 4, I think that he's trying to say to Hakkai about their friendship, to say that he can trust Gojyo. It's just after Hakkai worries about the permanent marker.
Gojyo: 'Permananent. Yeah. You got a problem with that?'
Hakkai: 'No, I guess not.'
Most of those moods work reall well for me - some of them are absolutely lovely, in the way you've linked what's actually happening in the books to the mood. There were a few that I wasn't sure worked - I'm going out on a limb and am guessing that they're the same ones where you've used the same image for several moods - calm, determined and enraged, for eg. The 'exhausted' one I found quite hard to interpret visually. *Loved* happy, aggravated, bitchy, pleased, predatory and good.
The 'nostalgic' one made me giggle in horror, slightly! *g*

Date: 2004-12-07 05:34 am (UTC)yes! and exactly like your example with vol 4, 'cause Gojyo *knows* that Hakkai's all gun-shy after Kanan.
Frankly 'exhausted' was annoying me too, and I'm not sure at all about the calm, determined, and enraged set ::is befuddled:: ditto with groggy, lethargic, morose.
'touched' amuses me to no end, and so too with 'artistic' 'cause it's when Hakkai is breaking fake!Gojyo's arm...'nostalgic' was one of those that made me cackle when making it =D
