Volume 5 of Saiyuki = so gay!

The first half is backstory, describing how the four first met. Gojyo seems to be unable to stop himself flirting with anyone and everyone, even at inappropriate such as waking up the seriously wounded stranger whom you've dragged home and have put in your bed.

Hakkai, or Gonou as he is still known as at this point, wakes up for the first time after his murderous rampage.

I really wish this page was in colour -  the first thing he sees is Gojyo hanging over him, his bright hair and red eyes backlit by a lamp. You can guess that he's instantly reminded of all the blood he's just spilled, and in fact, a few pages later he tells Gojyo that his hair and eyes kept him grounded in the reality of what he'd done and stopped him from going insane to escape the horror. His hair and eyes remind Gonou of blood. Gojyo's hair and eyes remind Gojyo of blood too, and have since his own mother tried to kill him. As far as we know, no one has ever needed Gojyo or told him that he was important before and his obsessive sleeping around seems to be his way of distracting himself from his need for emotional contact with another human being. Gojyo becomes genuinely attached to Hakkai. He takes him home and looks after him, which on the surface seems a very odd thing for a young man like him to do. It made me think he must be lonely and that he wants someone to care for, which is not at all the image that Gojyo likes to project to the world.  Later, when he thinks Gonou is dead, he cuts off his hair in mourning, incidentally making himself look very cute. Sanzo, in his caustic way, says that it won't make any difference.

Of course, Gonou isn't dead, but Sanzo lets him think so. On his own, Gojyo seems to come to terms with what he is. Sometime later he's staring at the red apples at a market stall, thinking that his hair and eyes will always be that colour, when someone picks up an apple and says, 'these are such a beautiful red, aren't they?'  (the fangirl in me died happy at this point). It is Gonou, who has been let off by the gods and has been allowed to start a new life with a new name: Hakkai.

Hakkai, after his trial, goes back to Gojyo and asks to stay with him. He tells Sanzo that Gojyo needs someone to remind him when garbage days is, but perhaps there's more going on and it's Hakkai that wants to be looked after too?  I admit I like to think so. He trusts Gojyo, after all.

Gojyo gets close to Hakkai, but he flirts with calculated annoyance with Sanzo.

heee! yes. What's painful is that in the anime Gojyo's hair is pink.

This shall be fixed.

Pink?! That's not right, surely. Does the anime follow the manga very closely, or is it only loosely based on it? I love in this volume how Hakkai and Gojyo both are obsessed with the symbolism of Gojyo's hair and eyes and how it's really important for both of them. It'd be a shame if the anime lost that.

I'm making a vid for them, and he shall have red hair.

...tho in the anime it's like...pink.

::wince::

I really don't reccommend the anime. The only reason I'm watching it is so I can vid it...it keeps intact the important eps, but it has lots of filler

hee, it's so fun to make, I'm not sure who the original author of the quote is, but I've seen it around on several icons =D

So, how are you going to get his hair red? It sounds a difficult thing to do.

I'm not that tempted by the anime, although I probably will watch it at some point. I'm very happy with just the manga at the moment, even though it'll be next year before volume 9 comes out in the UK. *pines*

There's this thing called color keying that I'm using, it's the same thing as blue screen / green screen that you hear getting used so much in movies.

Do you want vol 9 scanlations? I have them...

Oooh, the Gaiden translation, woot!

And yes, Gojyo is so desperately alone. They're so terribly sweet together.
