Browsing at the Sue Ryder sale book stall today, a book caught my eye (no, it wasn't thrown by an irate jumble sale goer). It was called 'Mist Over Pendle'. It's billed as 'the classic novel of witchcraft'. I'm guessing that where AJ Hall got the title for Lust Over Pendle from, which I still haven't read yet. It's on my 'to-read' list, which just keeps getting longer and longer. At the moment I want Sherlock Holmes fanfic and I want it badly. It's Neil Gaiman's fault - if you haven't yet read his A Study in Emerald then I heartily recommend it. You don't even need to know anything about the Cthulhu mythos to enjoy it, like me. It's just a good, sharp twisty story, which gives a wonderfully eerie alternative view of Conan Doyle's characters.
Also, I've watched Firefly twice all the way through now . I think Shepherd Book genuinely is a shepherd. I also think he might be an Alliance war hero who became disillusioned by the war - in 'Safe' he's treated with so much respect by the Alliance. I don't think he's a spy, but it's possible he was someone high up in the army or the police (which may be the same thing in Firefly world - I don't know.
Finally I've dragged my sorry carcass kicking into the broadband age by registering for the cheapest deal I can find. £18 with wanadoo, although it's not the most super-duperest of speeds, it's still good for browsing. I've installed Firefox from Mozilla - no pop-ups, which is good. It also seems speedier than IE but seems to not want to show me images. I can see icons in lj, but I can't see pictures that people post. How bloody annoying. Images on other sites are quite slow to download too.

Date: 2004-07-17 12:32 pm (UTC)I had found (at work, as well) some links to Holmes/Watson fic... :D
that's weird... if the Firefox problem doesn't solve itself, give me a couple of days to install it at work and pretend to be working while tinkering with it :D
Opera is even faster for me, but I loathe the ad banner in the corner. it stops pop-ups as well :>

Date: 2004-07-19 08:11 am (UTC)Me too. And I spent a bit of time prodding the SO for more information about the Cthulhu obsession. HP Lovecraft sounds like he was a pretty bad writer, but with amazing ideas.
I think I've solved the image problem - ot was smething to do with the preferences I'd set, then forgotten about. *blush* I quite like Firefox now, although I find it a pain to adjust myself to using a different browser after using IE for my entire online existance - it's the little things that trip me up, I find.
