In between filling in application forms, because this job is driving me slowly insane, I need a break to think about the last ever X-files episode which was screened last night.
It was mostly awful. The Cigarette Smoking Man in the pueblo! Nice hair, dude. All of poor old Mitch Pileggi's lines. Mulder's Disneyesque speech at the end. The expositionary flashbacks to explain the plot of the last nine series' felt clumsy and really, shouldn't have been necesary. It was almost as though they were admitting that the series had become incomprehensible to any but the most devoted watcher. And why was Agent Reyes sent out of the court room with no cross-examination? Either that was sloppy writing, or well, I don't know.
There were some bits that made me long for the old X-files, like flashes of Mulder humour; 'I could smell you coming, Clarice'. And lovely Nick Lea! As ghost!Krycek. Occupying a special place in Mulder's head; aah, I squeed and squeed again.
But the sum of it all was to make me nostalgic for the early series, when Mulder was an amazing, standout character, and the X-Files was my favourite show, ever.
RIP
