My day out with Roger Federer

Guess what happened to me today?

I went back to the O2 Arena to see Roger play. Right! But! I got there with minutes to spare after some interminable fucking around on tube trains that were broken all over London plus much walking. Anyway, I'm rushing up to level 4 where my seat is, high up in the highest gods, and an attendant hoikes me to one side and says: "Are you alone?"

"Uh, yeah?"

"Here." And she presses into my hand a new ticket that is for level 1, much better seat than the one I paid for!

"Um, what?" I said.

"We just have a few single seats spare. We like them to be used."

"Thank you. Wow. Thank you!" And she's laughing at the look on my face. Level 1! The fancy seats!

I stagger back down to Level 1, just in time for the match to begin. At first I can't find this strange row called 'GG'. It's clearly not row G. Finally, I ask an assistant. She takes me right down the steps to the front. It's the second row back, to one corner.

I sit down and Roger Federer is basically serving into my face.

I spend the next two hours alternately gaping, texting and taking photos. There was a moment when he leapt off the court into the air to reach a ball, and smashed it down. It was such a perfect display of athleticism that I, and the whole stadium, involuntarily cried out.

Afterwards, in some sort of karmic payback, all the trains at Paddington were delayed and then I got drenched cycling home. But essentially today was a day of amazingness.

Oh wow, so cool, Lou! Sam and I were really surprised at the number of empty seats in the lower level on Friday - I guess they wanted them filled for the semis. Nice one! Can't wait to see the photos. :D

Shame we couldn't meet up but the trains sound like they were dreadful. I heard there were random problems going on.

Oh, and you didn't stay for Soderling v Delpo, then? lol, I thought you had a full day ticket, ergo w0t I said in my text. :)

It was so cool! So close, and I was near the players entrance too so I got a brief close up of perfect curls and stuff!

I was in two minds about Delpo. After Rog I thought I'd stay and it would be a shame to waste the ticket but by about 6.30 I suddenly got so exhausted I decided not to stick it out. I was glad I made that decision in the end cos the trains at Paddington were so delayed I had to go back to Waterloo and catch a train from there, and it took me nearly two hours instead on 25.

PERFECT CURLS omg! Awesome. We were so far away, I was a bit sad I couldn't see Rafa's face properly while he played. I missed that. And then his bum while he got massaged, of course. Though luckily they had that on the big screen so I didn't totally lose out.

The trains! Omg, I just spent approximately 17 hours getting home from London. Took me 2.5 hours to get there, and actually, without added exaggeration, 5 hours to get back. Unbelievable. I heard there were problems with trains in places today. Nearly got smothercated at Victoria, too, being a n00b when it comes to the tube and not having any experience with the people and the fumes. Clearly not a good train day for either of us.

Well, next time we will meet up and hopefully actually go to matches and fangirl! And lurk around looking like we'd be perfect people for row GG seats. ;D

BTW, am now going to give bag to Mum for Christmas - it was going to be a thank you for looking after me when I have the op, but as that isn't going to now be until sometime in 2010, Christmas it is.
