I finished Black Powder War by Naomi Novik yesterday. Now I really really want my own clever talking dragon. So bad.

Also, Tharkay is such good slash fodder.

Laurence/Granby is fun, too. ;)

Exactly my own reaction! Want my very own dragon-friend!

Isn't Tharkay the best? I do hope he continues to play a large role in the next book.

I did wonder if that pairing was represented anywhere... Although Granby is actually never fleshed out as a character as much as I'd like, somehow.

He is, with his mysterious ways and his habit of turning up unexpectedly and making Laurence love him respect him. I do like how he's to tight lipped about his manly pain too, just like Laurence. I really really think they need to get trapped in a snowstorm with only one blanket.

And I'm 100% sure she did that, and made him hot and mysterious, to please the slashas.

That's true, the only really active part of his was the initial conflict with Laurence. Still, they're brothers-in-arms and iron each other's cravats... ;)

'Iron each other's cravats'. Uh huh. I see. In a platonic way.

i kind of want my very own stupid dragon, though, one who gets excited about cows and is maybe a little slow on the uptake but very very fast?

"She cannot be so very maternal, if she agreed to send him so far away in the first place," Laurence said to Granby, shortly after dawn the next morning; he was inspecting his best coat and trousers, which he had set out to air overnight, in the early light: his cravat needed pressing, and he thought he had noticed some frayed threads on his best shirt.

"They usually aren’t, you know," Granby said. "Or at least, not after the hatching, though they get broody over the eggs when they are first laid. Not that they don’t care at all, but after all, a dragonet can take the head off a goat five minutes after it breaks the shell; they don’t need mothering. Here, let me have that; I can’t press without scorching, but I can do up a seam." He took the shirt and needle from Laurence and set to repairing the tear in the cuff.

Who wrote that curtain fic exercise across AoS fandoms? ;)

One's own clever talking dragon with the uncomfortable observations about the unquestioned givens of one's society? Not so much, possibly.

I'm sure she did! After all, Novak used to write fanfiction, you know.

Heh. I see your point. Although actually, that might make it even more adorable.

Also it occurs to me, prompted entirely by your icon, that Jeep could potentially have a much bigger say in the activities of the Sanzo-ikkou, by which I mean get his own way more. What a shame he can't talk.

I do believe she still does *g*.

I liked the fannish little notice at the end of the book at I got, sitting before the bonus chapter from book 4, which says something like 'book 4 is a work in progress and the author claims the right to change anything she likes!'

Hee, yes. On the 'I was hatched, from an egg!' level?

Hakkai seems to understand him though, and Hakkai gets his own way often enough. I'd almost consider a scenario where Jiip is the eminence grise of the menage, passing ideas on through Hakkai, except that Hakkai's never nearly insistent enough about Jiip's physical comfort for that. 'Oh poor Jiip he's driven all through the night you're not making him go another five hours? Oh dear, sorry, Jiip.'

Unless of course that well-bred indirect expression of strong opinion (Oh poor Jiip = You can't make him go another five hours!!!) is Goujun's past breeding coming out in the current incarnation.
