Five years earlier
"Why are you dressed as a bat?" the man on the floor said.
His voice was as coolly enquiring as a doctor's, except that this man's business had nothing to do with saving lives. Not so far.
"Why the hell do you care?" Sanzo said. He didn’t have time. He never did. It was between him and the bats. "Shut up and let me rescue you."
Wide eyes looked up through a fringe of lank, dirty hair.
"All right," the man said, his voice as soft as a sigh. "That would be nice."
His eyes drifted shut as he spoke and his head lolled to one side. He was lying in a pool of blood. Not a big pool, and not his own. Sanzo swore, then scooped him up, feeling his hands slide in sticky cold fluid as he heaved him over his shoulder. He was far heavier than he looked. Sanzo staggered and then picked up the pace; shouting voices were coming closer, bouncing shrill echoes off the cave walls.
Hands twisted in his cape, too hard.
"But why?"
Sanzo was glad he didn't have to reply.

There had been a sound, Sanzo was sure of it. He sat straight up in bed, then realised he was clutching at the bed clothes. He let go.
"Goku?" he said, in a low voice, even though he knew Goku was away at school. Stupid.
The door to his room creaked open. Sanzo had the odd feeling that he should have known that it would be Hakkai.
"What's wrong?"
Hakkai didn't answer, he just came closer, right to the bed, then stood there, not blinking, his hands resting on the bedspread. Sanzo had sat at the kitchen table and watched him bake a cake this morning. He'd seemed almost normal, even if he had thrown the cake away before Sanzo could eat any.
Hakkai pulled back the covers and got in beside him, close enough for Sanzo to feel the brush of his arm and the chill of his feet under the blankets.
“You’re not awake,” Sanzo said, mostly to himself.
“No,” Hakkai mumbled. “Not yet.”
His eyes were open but unseeing, then, little by little, they closed.

"So," Hakkai said, wrapping his arms across his chest.
He could never get warm enough in this house. The walls of Sanzo's underground workshop were bare and the place smelled of damp plaster. Sanzo sat on a wooden chair and sipped coffee, flicking glances at Hakkai from the corner of his eye, like a watchful cat.
"What do you want?" Sanzo said.
Hakkai cleared his throat and let his shoulders fall back.
"I'm well now, thanks to you."
Sanzo was always so very spiky, like a porcupine. Or perhaps one of those poisonous spiny fish, or perhaps …
"And?"
Hakkai took a breath. "And you no longer need a wanted criminal under your roof."
"And?"
Hakkai smiled. Sanzo could be very tiresome.
"I'm going to hand myself over to the police."
From somewhere upstairs came the faint thunder of Goku leaping down the staircase three at a time, just as if he had never been told not to. Sanzo lowered his coffee cup, then held it out.
"I need a refill," he said.

Three months earlier
"His voice is so awesome," said Goku, flopping back on his bed as music filled the room.
His carelessly flung-out arm brushed again Nat’s hip and how could a simple thing like that make him shiver all over? Goku’s eyes fluttered shut. Sunlight was struggling through the cracks in the tightly drawn curtains and a beam fell across Goku's cheek. Gojyo's low voice surrounded them.
There was a poster of him on the wall, wearing tight black jeans and nothing else. He was posed on his knees, which were spread really a long way apart. It was new.
“Cool poster,” he mumbled.
"Yeah," Goku said, rolling over onto his stomach. He propped his chin in one palm. "What’s wrong?”
It was always like this He couldn’t seem to hide anything from Goku and it terrified him.
“So Sanzo. You’re his ward, right?” Nat said, picking at the bedspread. If they talked about this they would have to talk about-— other stuff. “What does that even mean?”
Nat could almost hear Goku’s brain turning over. He didn’t look like he knew the answer to that. Their gazes locked and held and Nat struggled to breathe normally. He loved coming here. He did. He loved the mystery of this rambling house, of Sanzo and his permanent bad mood, even the weirdo butler with the creepy smile. Better not mess it up by blurting out something stupid.
“I dunno,” Goku said.
“Does it mean he’s, like, your dad?”
He wasn’t anything like Nat’s father, which had to be a good thing.
“Umm. Not really,” Goku said, slowly, flopping onto his back again. He looked thoughtful now, and his gaze strayed over to the poster of Gojyo. “He’s too freaky for that.”
“Freaky like how? Not bad freaky?”
Goku shook his head and smiled at him. It was dazzling in the dim light.
“Nah. I’ll tell you some day.”

in particular sounded just like I'd expect a teenage boy to think/talk. The great visual of Gojyo was perfect too.
I like this fic universe so much I'd love icons for it.

Date: 2007-11-14 04:32 pm (UTC)I love the backstories. And the fact that Goku thinks that Gojyo is so sexy/hot/cool. I'm sure the "journey to the west" Goku and Gojyo would both be appalled and horrified at this turn in their relationship. XD
