I saw a beautiful red kite on Saturday. Red Kite as in one of these, or this.

But it wasn't in the countryside that surrounds Reading, where there are quite a few red kites now. Instead, it was flying very low and slowly over West Street, in the very centre of town. It was quite clearly looking for food to scavenge. Or possibly baby pigeons nesting on roof ledges. Amazing.

Peregrine falcons have made a huge comeback as urban birds, living atop office buildings (http://www.iowadnr.gov/wildlife/files/falconcam.html) and power plants (http://birdcam.xcelenergy.com/riversidefalcon.asp).

What a coincidence, my mother-in-law was saying how she had seen a whole flock of Red Kites in the Chilterns yesterday. Apparently they introduced a few pairs from Wales and they have now made an astounding comeback. It's always fantastic to hear about an endangered species making a remarkable recovery ^________^!

I shall keep my eyes peeled now when I'm out and about in Reading ^_~!

some of them nest on the top of the prudential buildings, if that's any help.

though I must admit it is funny listening to the parentals (avid birdwatchers, near the edges of purley) going 'what is it, what is it?' '... one of the red kites.' Yep, they've got to be that common.

This is a fab coincidence, but I saw a falcon in the city centre this morning, circling over the top of college! Apparently they are nesting there. *g*

Apparently they are nesting on top of the Prudidential building, so it's worth keeping your eyes peeled.

Wow, I didn't know they were on the Prudential building. That really is quite fabulous. *g* Those red kites? Common as muck they are.
