Holidays and books
Aug. 22nd, 2004 10:40 amI FINALLY managed to get my sweaty paws on a copy of Cyteen, after wanting to read it for about a year. Could I find this book anywhere, ever, second hand or new? No, or at least not until last Wednesday when I went into Waterstones in Birmingham and there it was in the Cs. The first part, in the format of a transcribed instructional history tape, is completely enthralling - it's going to be my holiday book.
I'll be off early tomorrow morning to stay in my brother's cottage in Staithes, which is a ridiculously pretty fishing village in Yorkshire on the edge of the North York Moors. Apparently James Cook was a grocer's boy there until he visited the careers office and decided to retrain as a famous explorer. It has tiny winding streets, a fancy restaurant, several pubs and cafes, a shop that sells everything including washing machines. Castle Howard is nearby and we may even make it to York for a nostalgic trip round the charity shops. We should be back next Saturday/Sunday, during which time I'll have no Internet access at all. *sobs* So if there's anything you need to tell me that can't wait (unlikely, I know), then today's the day.
I want to finish typing up my Holmes fic today before we have to go out to a barbeque, although it looks as though it might piss down later so it may be rained off. I wouldn't mind that much, to be honest. I also want to go swimming (have just mastered the front crawl after all these years!), buy train tickets, go shopping, do laundry, wash self, pack, tidy blah blah blah.
My friend's child can now say 'egg!' very clearly and precisely, when all her other words are still a bit incoherent. Is egg an easy word to say? It must be.
