It was brutal and heartwrenching and I love Minekura even more for doing that to us.

They kind of... leapt out at me, so to speak. At first I was all disblelieving she'd gone there with the guts, and then I was so pleased she had. And no one to stuff them back in. Disembowelling shouldn't be so poignant.

... The conversations we have in Saiyuki fandom are weird, aren't they?

Heh. Given that I've been fantasy role-player (tabletop, not LARP) for lo, these several decades, I'm used to having conversations with friends that make random passersby stop, stare, and fetch a wide circle around us ... .

And actually, the thing is, it should be poignant. We should all be Gojyo-ish and think what we can do, not just turn away and flip out, thinking about our own feelings. As readers, all we can do for Tenpou is witness and mourn, so - here we are. Not weird at all, really.

(It does make me wonder what the Bosatsu was doing during all this ... .)

Yes, that! The whole thing of him talking to Kenren and asking to borrow his lighter and everything... aargh. That woman is amazing. I couldn't imagine a more perfect and heartbreaking ending.

(Also I suddenly realise I know Far Too Much about guts and the design and naming thereof. One too many hospital leaflets... I wonder if that's where Minekura found her gut!fetish? Because she does seem to love drawing them in perfect detail... O.O)

Oh god, the guts. She does have an obsession with them and draws them in loving details. I remember some of the early volumes of Saiyuki had horrendously graphic drawings of what Gojyo shakujou could do to a man. Okay, that sounds dirtier than I meant...

But yes. WAHHHHHHHH! That was the most perfect and gutwrenching (sorry) ending for Tenpou.

It took me so long to figure out that I was looking at the frog ashtray upside-down, and when I did, it brought me to all-new wibbling lows.

I never thought the scene where Gojyo finds Hakkai in the road would strike me as happy, but at least that time when he get his guts slashed open and keeps on crawling with the last of his strength, there's someone there for him at the end of it. Oh, Tenpou.

Oh! I couldn't work that out, so thank you for telling me. That's just an extra little bit of painful detail, because it means they've trashed all his beloved books.

This death puts that whole scene in a whole new light, which is quite amazing. I really do love Minekura's ability to pile layers of new meanings to previous (future?) events.

Yeah, I think that is as close as Minekura is ever going to come to saying, "Yeah, they were lovers." Of course, she didn't SAY it say it, but I mean really. The last page or two of this chapter are not even really subtext. I was thinking about that earlier, actually, that she pretty much spelled it out as much as she probably could.
