More lj shenanigans

Arrgh LJ, why must you be so shit? It seems as if its censoring its popular interests page to not include interests such as Sex, Boys, Guys, Girls, Fanfiction, Yaoi, Hardcore, Porn, Bondage, Faeries, Pain, Depression, and Bisexuality.

I hope the reason for this is not as utterly depressing as it seems to be, but I am not holding my breath for an explanation from LJ that makes sense or anything.

Um... I don't think they're removing interests, they're just removing some items from the list of stats they publish to show which interests are most popular. Probably because they don't want to upset their advertisers, or possibly (least likely considering the nature of the interests they've removed) because they have some kind of software glitch.

Ah, Rampant Capitalism. How nice.

*hugs* Give my love to the squee panel!!

That was poorly worded on my part - I don't think they're removing interests either, just that they're apparently censoring them.

Aha, yes! It might be a software glitch - it would be nice if it was. Sigh.

Eh? So they don't want people thinking that LJ might be a good place to get support if you have problems with pain or depression?

I think my favourite part is how "guys" was apparently reinstated, but "girls" was not. Because I suppose girls' sexuality is *gigglegiggle* harmless and chaste, but men's sexuality is SERIOUS BUSINESS.

I keep telling myself all these changes don't matter much in the long run, but I'm starting to feel this site bears very little resemblance to the one I signed up with. How long until all journals have ads, even the paid ones? How long until all those interests listed above are 100% bannable?

Even if these changes don't impact me personally, I don't want to patronise a company that clearly doesn't share my morals.

Yeah, I feel pretty much the same. It's not surprising really, as scribblemoose says - rampant capitalism!

It's tempting to ask [livejournal.com profile] fandom_counts to get its members to add, say, "fabdom" (or "fandom" as I meant to write, but fabdom might be better) and see what happens. The bottom interests in that table are only 16500, half of fandom_counts members.

Faeries?! Jeez. *heavy sigh* I think that sums it up. No Fairies of any description because they either offend the religious or the homophobes. Or both.

Oh well, better get back under the carpet where I belong.

Bah. Double bah.

The items they chose to censor are bizarre, to say the least. I understand they need to make money, but I wish they could find a way to do it without screwing over their customers at the same time.

Oh for fuck's sake!

WTF is wrong with them? Do they sit around the office brainstorming ways to piss off their constituents and/or be jerks?

I find it rather amusing (in a dark, sardonic, not terribly funny way -_-) that all of the sex stuff is bad, depression is bad (gee, way to make depressed people feel better, really, go you) girls and fanfiction is bad. But drugs are okay! Whee!! Let's change fandom from writing about sex to writing about drugs, because obviously, eventhough the act of sex isn't illegal, but drugs are, it's okay to talk about drugs, but not sex. :D

grr...you know, there's enough problems in the world right now, we don't need to add petty prejudiced people on a power trip to that.

This... Is too weird. Now I know that I've grown up in a relatively free-minded environment, that Europe as such is often more accepting of homosexuality than the US, etc. etc. etc. but COME ON! Am I really that strange in just not understanding what's so horrible, wrong, forbidding and unnatural about bisexual and gay people? Because I don't get it. at all.

For one, yup, let's protect the kids! Instead of giving them somewhere else to find out about the birds and the bees, we learn them to up their online age until they seem old enough. Because that'll totally help them to get into on line crowds of their own age, rather than the real creeps. I know I changed my age to 18 to get into pages I wasn't allowed and why not? It's easy enough, noone is actually going to be able to CHECK...
Besides... Of course teenagers don't have sex. Obviously, I mean, they don't have that huge amount of hormones raging in their systems, aren't curious to anything and they all stay perfect and good under mommies wing and have perfect little happy lives. Oh for GODS SAKE PEOPLE! Seriously, please open your eyes and use them.
Yes, there is a lot of bad stuff out there. There is rape and non-con and just plain creepyness. One of the reasons I like yaoi over 'normal' porn (apart from the fact that it's female oriented) is because hey, there's *gasp* feelings involved! The biggest part of fanfiction is about overcoming your fears and problems and love and that no matter what is concidered normal, being 'abnormal' is ok aswell. Boohoohoo such a bad thing for 'the kids' to learn (because hey, I'm only nineteen and one and a half year ago I was one of the kids that needed protection *ahum* as well -_-)

Ok, rant is way too long already, sorry for spamming -_-;;;
