Jobs, exercise, books, crazy bread

I have still not heard back from the people who interviewed me for a job and it's been 3 weeks. I can conclude from this I have not got the job, but at least I thought they might send me a letter! Unless they are just incredibly slow. Sigh.

I've not been cycling to Rivendell recently, because my knees started to hurt. They calmed down now so I think I might start again, but this time maybe not quite so violently.

Also, I had a tendonitis flare-up in my arm, which has largely gone down. My method of self-treatment, for those interested: I switch my mouse to the other hand; stop using my laptop in silly positions like balanced on my leg while I'm slumped on my side on the sofa; slather on liberal quantities of ibuprofen gel; and use an ice pack as much as possible over the afflicted area... 10 minutes on, ten minutes off, then another ten minutes. It's tedious but it works. I tie my cool pack on with a tea towel. Doing this last thing at night seems to be benefical.

In other news, I finished Beyond Black. I loved the main character, Alison. I think it's partly because she has to live such an odd life, half in and half out of reality. Also that Colette her hatched brained assistant doesn't let her choose the garden shed she wants. I'd like to read some more Hilary Mantel.

Also on books, Matt gave me a copy 1000 - which describes month by month what life was like during the year 1000. It's not bad, and goes into some detail about technology and religion. Apparently, July was the hungry month, and people would make bread with all sort of things, including ergot-infested rye, hemp, ancient dried peas, poppies or basically anything they wouldn't eat at any other time of year. Then it was all ground together to make flour for bread. The resulting bread was called 'crazy bread'. "It was as if a spell had been cast on the whole village," one monk wrote.

Umm, to sum up. I know where my towel is. And my tea towel!

ETA: more cravat tying instructions!

I'm relieved that the Mathematical tie does not occasion many accidents. It's always good to consider Health & Safety issues when choosing one's cravat.

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
That's quite right! You wouldn't want to pass out from stricture of the neck, or possibly trip over stray cravat ends.

Ooh, a diagram... I've been trying to decide how Julian ties his cravat. Even though it's kind of a moot point now.

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 08:35 am (UTC)(link)
No, but we do want to know how Patrick ties his cravat!

That sounds dirty.

[identity profile] emungere.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 01:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that might be because you're imagining him tying it around Julian's wrists. Although I am of course just guessing here...

...And the oriental tie..looks quite hard to achieve! and July..hmmm can I wait patiently! ^__^ I'll have to I guess!

Yes, I do not under stand at all some of those cravat ties. I think I want to buy one and experiment.

They may really just be incredibly slow. The people at my current job took longer than that to get back to me - by the time they called, I'd forgotten I'd ever applied. And then they wanted me to start by the end of that week. ;-)

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
That is sligtly comforting! Most of the jobs I've been for have let me know pretty much straight away, but then these people might have a different time scale. It was two months before they called me or interview, after all.

Ditto on the job thing - often they are waiting for some incredibly busy higher-up to formally sign off on their choice. There is nothing wrong with ringing the HR person or the original contact for the job to check. They should be able to tell you where they are up to in the process. If you didn't get it, it is also often helpful to ask for feedback on how you did in the interview - if you only just missed out it is great to find out, because you'll know for next time that you were in the right ball park.

Hope your arm gets better quickly. I greatky dislike anything that keeps you from writing!

Thanks! It's a lot better!

I should ring the HR person. Also, the interview feedback would be really good to get.

Dude, ergot can kill people. Crazy!

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 08:27 am (UTC)(link)
*makes crazy face*

Erm, maybe not ergot then!

[identity profile] mistressrenet.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, still possible, as I'm pretty sure they didn't know the cause and effect was back then. I once read an absolutely amazing (http://www.amazon.com/Who-Was-Changed-Dead/dp/0860686779/ref=sr_1_1/102-8428586-2527351?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1180184121&sr=8-1) book about an outbreak of ergotism in, IIRC, an English village, far closer to the modern era.

I hope the tendonitis goes away. *pets arm*

Also, hmm over here... those that advertise job vacancies, and due to stiff competition for jobs, they always say that only 'those that have been shortlisted will be notified' and then again some don't even have the courtesy to say so. I hope the Brits haven't picked up on this trend!

I'm hoping that this isn't the case. SO I do hope you hear from them soon, so's not to keep you from hanging. *crosses fingers for you!*

[identity profile] louiselux.livejournal.com 2007-05-26 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
Aw, thanks. The arm is a lot better already.

Yeah, it would be nice to know either way. It's quite common not to get notified if you haven't got an interview, but if you've actually had an interview and are waiting, it seems to be still the done thing to let everyone know, either way. I don't really know what to think, but I will ring them. :(

Sorry to hear about the interview and the tendonitis. [sends sympathy vibes]

The 1000 book sounds interesting.

Cool! Not that any of us will ever use it, but I'm definitely looking forward to reading what you do with it...
