Green and pixelated playback of avi clips

I solved a minor technical problem tonight.  Go me. This is by way of a record in case I ever have the same problem again, or if someone is having the same problem, then it might help you out.

Real player was not letting me see avi clips that use the Xvid codec (you can tell they use this codec because they say Xvid after them). The clips were green and massively pixelated. Annoyingly they were the Reload eps that I spent about 10 hours downloading.

I downloaded X-vid Binary - didn't work.

Downloaded FDDshow - it worked!

If that hadn't worked, I would have installed the avi 4cc changer, and changed XVID to DIVX in the settings.

Or apparently using VideoLAN player solves the green pixelation problem too.

VideoLAN player is amazing. I highly reccommend it--it's a reasonably small app, and plays EVERYTHING. Matroska video files? No problem! It even lets you select audio and subtitle streams, which is pretty damn awesome.

That's interesting - I'd never heard of it before but now I'm tempted to give it a try. So it's better than windows Media Player?

I think it's much better. It doesn't play audio files (thus the name, Video LAN player, yes, I state the obvious -- I'll blame it on no sleep, maybe) but it will play just about anything, with fewer hiccups than any other program I've tried (those being: WinAmp, Windows Media Player, Real Player, DivX Player, probably something else I'm forgetting) I use VideoLAN and sometimes WinAmp (which also plays all kinds of audio files and rocks.)

Yeah - it looks really good and I'm not that thrilled with Windows Media Player, which I use at the moment.
