This is set before they leave on their journey. Gojyo meets an old man in the bar and, after the old man beats him at poker, takes cards lessons from him. He doesn't tell Hakkai and secretly he's thinking that he'll get good enough to beat Hakkai, maybe. Gojyo likes living with Hakkai, but he's not even sure why. The story is ten card games; two with Hakkai, eight with the old man. It ends with a game between Gojyo and Hakkai, the 'tenth lesson'.

The long plotty Eroica novel which took me several years to write, where Dorian is arrested and imprisoned. Klaus visits him in prison several times, before finally breaking him out. He takes Eroica to a safe house and keeps him there, where they form a tentative truce, which eventually leads to Klaus and Dorian going on the run, Doiran growing his hair back, hot sex and Klaus working out how to have a life outside of NATO.

Kanda really does go to France, and for a year this time. Tachibana has no choice but to employ a new member of staff. Unfortunately, the only suitably qualified person is manly and handsome. Ono falls for him very hard, and of course Tachibana is not even slightly jealous. At all. He is suspicious of this perfect new man and checks up on him, and finds out that he's a spy sent in by a rival bakery to learn Ono's pastry secrets. He thinks he'll tell Ono straight away, but he doesn't, because he can't quite bring himself to shatter Ono's happiness. It ends with Ono admitting that he knew all along, but he didn't want to spoil the beautiful bond of sex that they had.

A Saiuki ghost story, about a ghost that haunts the ikkou as they travel over a mountain range. It won't leave them, not even when Sanzo works magic to lay it to rest. It shows them their worst fears, one by one, except that this doesn't frighten them, because, as Sanzo points out, they've already dealt with those fears, and what could be worse in the future? The unspoken message is that they might lose each other, or die. The ghost makes sure it's not unspoken, by pointing this out. Hakkai chooses this point to blast it to atoms with a qi blast. They move on.
